With the destruction of Time Stone and the opening of Multiverse, the Lord of the Dark Dimension might return to MCU.

Over the course of the Infinity Saga, which lasted over a decade, we have seen numerous villains and antagonists. While some of them were forgettable and bland, others were extremely powerful and dangerous. Some antagonists like Loki, The Mad Titan Thanos, and Helmut Zemo had an undeniably huge impact on MCU, but there were some who didn’t get their due. One of such overpowered beings, who hardly got 10 minutes of screentime was Dormammu in Doctor Strange (2016).

Dormammu was showcased as an unstoppable force of evil who seeks to conquer every universe of the Multiverse. As the Lord of the Dark Dimension, he was built up to be an incredibly powerful mystic being no one can defeat. The Ancient One, portrayed by Tilda Swann, described him as a precursor to time itself. Under his influence, Zealots like Kaecilius were able to unlock exceptional levels of Dark Magic. Unfortunately, after all that build up, fans did not get to see Dormammu the way they expected.

Dormammu appeared in the final few minutes of the film and was bested by the wits and the will of Doctor Stephen Strange. He wasn’t accustomed to time and hence, he agreed with Strange’s bargain to break free from the time loop. That’s the last we saw of the seemingly invincible being and it was largely disappointing because he didn’t get to show his potential. We did get to see him randomly and effortlessly kill Strange over and over again, but that was all.

However, it was pretty much obvious that if Dormammu knew how to deal with time, he would have been unstoppable. After all, he is an immortal being unlimited power even in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Presently the only thing holding him back from invading the MCU reality once again, is his deal with Doctor Strange. Till now Dormammu has kept his world and honoured the deal but if you think about it, what is it that actually stops him? Just his honour and time.

If we take comics as a reference, Dormammu made a similar deal with Strange, but it had nothing to do with time. The deal was that Strange would help him keep the Mindless Ones from invading Dark Dimension in return for leaving the Earth realm. Dormammu later tried to break the pact by sending Mordo in his stead to kill Strange and then take over their reality. So, there is a high chance that Dormammu might return the way he did in comics.

Another thing to be noted here is that in the prime Earth of MCU, Thanos has destroyed the Time Stone. This means Strange cannot trap Dormammu in a time loop again, hence Dormammu can now easily invade the realm. All he needs to do is to have someone destroy the sanctums for which he can use Mordo. So basically, the only thing holding him is his word but for how long?

Dormammu is the most dangerous villain which MCU has introduced till now and he must return in Phase 4. Phase 4 deals with the multiverse and Dormammu is a very serious threat to it as he literally absorbs whole universes. So, it won’t be a surprise if we see a return of “The Dread One” in Doctor Strange 2 and beyond.
