Marvel has been known to hire actors who aren’t a household name and make them superstars but since their status has risen to the Moon, they’re actually considering attaching big names to their brand and exploit the actor’s IP to grow even bigger. With Eternals, Moon Knight and the recent Marvel movies drawing big names from Hollywood like Oscar Isaac and Angelina Jolie. A recent rumor also suggests that Blade Runner 2049 star Ryan Gosling wants to join the MCU as Ghost Rider. However the biggest star joining the MCU has to be one actress who’ll be appearing in the upcoming Secret Invasion. Hint: Her ex co-star starred in Eternals alongside Angelina Jolie. Okay, that co-star is Kit Harrington and the actress is Emilia Clarke .
Clarke’s addition to the MCU surfaced last year and after that she was seen in some leaked footage of the Secret Invasion ‘s filming. The footage showed the GOT star being chased by Cobie Smulders’ Agent Maria Hill. The footage also showed her being pushed to the ground and get choked by Maria Hill, I would like to see that scene. The filming was taking place in London. Even though it’s been a while since we know she is joining the MCU but what we had no clue as what or rather who? Well thanks Disney, we may know who the Mother of Dragons will play next.
Secret Invasion: Is Emilia Clarke Not Playing a Skrull?
The conversation of which character will Emilia Clarke play has been going on the MCU, for quite a while now. An early August report suggested that the Game of Thrones star would be playing the well-known Skrull from the Comic Con named G’iah. However, this latest update suggests otherwise. Disney marketing team or social media handlers may have screwed up here as the official page of Secret Invasion on the Streamr app shared a GIF of Emilia Clarke’s character saying, “It’s the beginning.” That is not where the problem lies.
The real problem reveals itself on closer inspection. The post is tagged as Abigail Brand, hinting that our Mother of Dragons will be playing that character in Secret Invasion series. Clarke and Marvel have maintained quite bit of mystery when it comes to the identity of the character that the actress is going to play. So, this is not an intentional post rather an accidental slip-up from Disney.
According to The Direct, “Abigail Brand is the director of SWORD, a subdivision of SHIELD charged with defending Earth from extraterrestrial threats. Brand played a key role in Marvel’s cosmic affairs, such as the comics’ version of the Secret Invasion. In that storyline, Brand was present when the Skrulls destroyed SWORD’s orbital headquarters. As a result, Brand broke into a Skrull vessel en route to Earth to use the ship’s system to purge the crew of shape-shifting aliens aboard. This successful attempt then led to freeing Reed Richards to ultimately help gather Earth’s heroes to resist the invasion:”
I’m not sure whether this an accidental slip-up or an intentional post. While Marvel has been quite about the identity of Clarke in the MCU, the identity may have been revealed during the marketing campaign of the film, questioning the importance of the secret identity. Abigail Brand’s introduction in the MCU through Secret Invasion, suggests a big turn around as that means that the MCU from now on will push SWORD into the forefront. However, it makes sense because the cosmic organization due to the events of WandaVision has already lost its former director- Tyler Hayward.
This hammers home the point that Secret Invasion will include SWORD in the larger MCU as well and the organization won’t be limited to the Disney+ Series. This would also line-up with what Clarke had mentioned about being ready to spend a decade at Marvel. That means that the actress isn’t just important to the series but rather to the entire franchise moving forward. However, I’m not sure how does this make sense for the BTS images where we see Maria Hill choking her, why would a SHIELD agent try to kill a SWORD agent.
There is always the possibility that Clarke isn’t actually Abigail Brand and the post is tagged just to mess with the audience or the person Clarke is talking to in that image is Abigail Clarke, hence the tag and hence, the confusion.
Secret Invasion will start streaming on Disney+ in Spring 2023.
