It has been twelve years later since we’ve heard from Pandora and now we’re getting a sequel to the highest grossing movie of all time – Avatar 2: The Way of Water, The sequel has been in the works for a long time as James Cameron, director of Avatar wanted to expand on the world created by him. After Disney’s acquisition of Fox, they not only green lit the sequel rather other 4 follow-up films as well that are suppose to release every 2 years. The studio has sure put in a lot of trust in Cameron and given his track record with box office numbers, they’ve taken a calculated risk. Earlier this year we’d gotten our first look at the sequel as the official teaser was released by Disney. Since then we’ve been getting small nuggets of information and footages for the sequel but no official trailer yet.
Some official images have been released that give us an idea of what specific characters will look like in the sequel. Like Kate Winslet’s Na’vi. Considering the budget the sequel is being made on i.e., $250 million it is fair to say Cameron is cooking something meaty for the audiences. The visuals in the film might and should be better than the original, the heavy post production work might be the reason behind the trailer being delayed but the wait was finally over as the official trailer of the sequel released last week. The trailer looked stunning but along with that the runtime of the film was also revealed and it is looonggggg…..however, director James Cameron has a reason for it.
Avatar 2: The Way of Water Is Long for a Reason!
Avatar: The Way of Water is an extremely long film. It is officially 3 hours and 10 minutes. This will be one of the last films of its kind as such a long film getting theatrical release with such a gigantic budget is rare thing. Endgame was over 3 hours because it was the culmination of 11 years of Marvel movies which was a sure shot success. Nowadays, all the films that we see are only 2 hours which have a big budget riding on them. This is mostly done to get extra shows in the schedule of theatres.
In a recent interview, Director James Cameron explained why is the sequel even longer than the original, “The goal is to tell an extremely compelling story on an emotional basis. I would say the emphasis in the new film is more on character, more on story, more on relationships, more on emotion. We didn’t spend as much time on relationship and emotion in the first film as we do in the second film, and it’s a longer film, because there’s more characters to service. There’s more story to service.”
