Adipurush

Adipurush is an upcoming Bollywood film that will retell the Hindu Epic- Ramayana. The film stars Prabhas as Ram, Kriti Sanon as Sita and Saif Ali Khan as Ravana. The film is written and directed by Om Raut who has had a very good track record as he has made films like Lokmanya: Ek Yupurush and Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior. Both of his films maintained qualities of a good story while maintaining a mass appeal. He is one of the few filmmakers who has successful found a balance between a grounded story with great visuals for a good theatrical experience. Tanhaji’s massive box office success is a testament of the filmmaker’s understanding of the audiences and how he has a way of making these larger than life historical characters relatable to the masses.

So, when it was announced that Om Raut would be helming this extremely costly venture I was excited and kind of relieved as the project was in good hands. However, my entire perception regarding the film flipped after I saw the teaser. A film that was supposedly made on a budget of 550 crores had such terrible visual effects that looked like Instagram or Snapchat filters. There were a lot of problems with the trailer, be it Prabhas’ odd look as Ram or Saif Ali Khan’s confused Ravan who doesn’t know which timeline he belongs, and the visual effects is something that we’re all aware of, so I won’t say more than this. Today, as I was surfing I came across a video where a VFX artist fixed a scene from Adipurush without spending 500 crores on it and I was fascinated by the difference in quality. Let’s check it out.

How the VFX artist Improve Adipurush’s Underwater Scene?

One of the biggest gripes I had with the teaser was the look of it, why was it all green screen? Why were there no real locations used? I was not expected a James Cameron movie but for a venture that has so much money riding on it this was not expected. Honestly, the only thing that worked for the teaser was Sharad Kelkar’s voice. Saif Ali Khan’s Ravan too felt like it belonged to something from Star Wars rather than Ramayana. Why does Ram have a tradition look but not Ravan? Why is there no Golden Lanka? Why is it a haunted house?

I have more such questions but let’s not delve on them for now. One of the major questions was why did they use the underwater scene in teaser as it had such poor VFX and it looks like many other people have the same question. In fact, some people have gone to the extent of recreating that scene which turned out to be better than the original one we saw in the trailer. A youtuber named Kunwar posted a video on Instagram where the artist proved how the underwater scene could drastically improved. He did that with almost huge expense.

After this video came into the limelight, the masses went crazy as they were flummoxed how can a DIY thing can be better than a film which has a budget of 500 crores. This started a notion that further trolled the film. As per the latest updates, Adipurush has been delayed to a much later release date than its original January release as after tremendous backlash the makers of the film understood that they have to deliver a much superior product other wise the film would be a box office abomination which would result in an unaccountable loss.

Adipurush is supposed to release in theatres near you on 16th June 2023.
