God of War TV Series Officially Under Development By Amazon!

The God of War Franchise is one of the biggest and most popular gaming franchises. The first game in the franchise was made back in 2005. After its instant success the game was only going to get bigger and bigger. This action-adventure hack and slash crusade game was developed by Santa Monica Studios and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. Every iteration of the God of War has been highly critically acclaimed and liked by fans. The games have been an absolute game changer in the gaming industry and certainly took the boundaries of gaming to new extremes. The visuals that the God of War franchise offers is something unreal and the surprising thing is that they keep getting better.

The most recent reboot to the God of War franchise came in 2018 and it was instantly a hit, it was even considered to be the Game of the Year by many. The sequel to that was this year’s God of War: Ragnarok and the sequel was an improvement on the original game in the every aspect. It was able to live up to all the ridiculous expectations that fans had from it. The game was extremely successful and it looks like its success is going to give it a live action adaptation. According to a new report, God of War is getting a series at Amazon Prime Video!

God of War Series Is On Its Way!

God of War has just become a part of the long list of video-games based series like The Last of Us from HBO, Halo from Paramount+, Twisted Metal from Sony and PlayStation Productions and Horizon from Netflix. The series would be developed by Rafe Judkins (The Wheel of Time and Oscar nominees Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby (Children of Men, Iron Man, The Expanse). They will serve as showrunners. Sony Pictures and Amazon Studios are producing the show in association with PlayStation Productions.

The Head of Global Television at Amazon Studios gave a statement about the newly announced show. “God of War is a compelling, character-driven franchise that we believe will captivate our global customers as much with its expansive and immersive worlds as its rich storytelling. We are honored to share in the adventure of exploring the God of War mythology in such a momentous way with Sony Pictures Television, PlayStation Productions and [game developer] Santa Monica Studio.”

The show has been in development since March and the official description of the show reads, “Kratos sets off on a dangerous journey with his estranged son to spread her ashes from the highest peak — his wife’s final wish. Kratos soon realizes the journey is an epic quest in disguise, one which will test the bonds between father and son, and force Kratos to battle new gods and monsters for the fate of the world.” 

Sony Pictures TV President Katherine Pope said, “We are so proud and excited to be working with our friends at Amazon Studios and our partners at PlayStation Productions to adapt this beautiful and heartbreaking game into a premium live-action series. Rafe, Mark and Hawk are crafting a transportive series that charts a path through the ancient mythological journey of Kratos.”

PlayStation Productions head Asad Qizilbash added to the excitement regarding the show, “God of War is one of PlayStation’s most awarded video games, so we’re excited to partner with Sony Pictures Television and Amazon Studios to bring our beloved franchise to fans and new audiences in a bold and authentic way.”

Judkins, Fergus and Ostby are executive producing God of War with Santa Monica Studio creative director Cory Barlog, PlayStation Productions’ Qizilbash and Carter Swan, Santa Monica Studio’s Yumi Yang and Vertigo’s Roy Lee. Santa Monica Studio’s Jeff Ketcham is co-EP.

God of War: Ragnarok is available for purchase on Play Station 5 and Play Station 4. God of War Series doesn’t have a release day yet.
