Sex Education Season 4

Netflix’s coming of age show – Sex Education, has become quite a sensation. The show has completed three seasons in late 2021 after being delayed for a long time because of the pandemic. The show focuses on Moordale Secondary School charting the personal adventures and sexual exploits of its students, teachers, and parents. The series is lauded for handling sensitive issues in such a mature, sensitive and entertaining way. Sex Education has garnered one of the most loyal fan bases making its viewership fly off the chart. Considering how Season 3 ended, everyone was super excited for Season 4 as it also might be the last for the show. Season 3’s finale saw Moordale being shut down given all the controversy that has been happening there.

This was huge as without Moordale Sex Education would never be the same show. The school connected every character in the show but now that the school is closed all the characters would be opting for a new school.  While many suspected that in Season 4 this decision would be reversed it doesn’t look like as many cast members are not returning for Season 4 like Simone Ashely, Patricia Allison, Tanya Reynolds, and Rakhee Thakrar. This means when Sex Education would return, it would be a completely different show. Today’s news seconds this assumption as series regular Emma Mackey who plays Maeve Wiley has seemingly confirmed that she won’t be returning after season 4, if the series continues.

Why is Emma Mackey Leaving Sex Education?

Emma Mackey had her breakout role in 2019’s Sex Education after which she has experienced a sudden rise to fame as she starred in films like Death on the Nile and Emily. After season three’s end, the future of Sex Education was unsure because of heavy cast departures. One of the names were also Emma Mackey, however, at the end Mackey decided to return for Sex Ecuation season 4. The fourth installment of the show will be very different simply because of all the cast changes and we have gotten another one as Emma Mackey has confirmed that season 4 will be her last and she won’t be starring season 5 if it happens.

While speaking to Radio Times, Emma Mackey confirmed what fans had feared for a long time. When she was asked about her return for season 5, the actor had this to say, “Season 5? I’ve just finished the fourth one last week! No, I don’t think I’ll be in Season 5. I’ve said goodbye to Maeve.” Sex Education has not been renewed for season 5 owing to all these cast exists but if Netflix does renew then we won’t be seeing Maeve Wiley’s character in it. Emma Mackey’s decision should not come as a total surprise as she’d mentioned in a past interview with Total Film via GamesRadar how she feels while playing Maeve.

The Death on the Nile star had said, “It’s just always tricky, it’s different when you’re playing a character that is sort of stuck in time. You know, we’re playing 17-year-olds, and we’re all almost 30, it is a bit weird. It’s a blessing because it is a launchpad, and it is something that has given us opportunities in different ways but it’s something that I want to gracefully exit from, and be happy that it exists and protect it and enjoy it in the time that it has existed in but yeah, it needs to be left alone now I think. […]”

In the same conversation she further said, “We can all move on and take what we learned from Sex Ed as well because it has been a school, quite literally, for all of us. It’s just wonderful to have had that education and to have that baptism of fire and to have just been flung into that whole world. I think it’s made us stronger.”

Sex Education stars an amazing cast including Asa Butterfield, Emma Mackey, Ncuti Gatwa, Gillian Anderson, Mimi Keene, Tanya Reynolds, Connor Swindells, Jemima Kirke, Patricia Allison, Simone Ashley, Sami Outalbali, Rakhee Thakrar, George Robinson, Alistair Petrie, Hannah Waddingham, Dua Saleh and Dan Levy. All three seasons of Sex Education are currently streaming on Netflix. Sex Education Season 4 doesn’t have a release date yet.
