Venom was absolutely grilled by critics but fans seemed to love it, including me. However, it was China’s box office that helped Venom become a financial success as it grossed over $269 million in the Land of the Dragon. That was more than its domestic collection. With a $856 million run at the worldwide box office over a budget of $116 million, it was only inevitable that we get a sequel and we did. In 2021, the second film of the franchise- Venom: Let there be Carnage released in theatres and it did decently considering the post pandemic era. The film was made on a budget of $110 Million and its final worldwide collection was $502 Million (No China). The second film much like the original didn’t do too well for the critics and I would even go to the point of saying that it was the worst film of 2021.
We know that a threequel is already in the works but a part of the reason what made Let There Be Carnage to exciting was the post credit scene where we see that Venom has been transported to the MCU. While we didn’t see him get involved in the action of No Way Home, the post credit scene did fair job of explaining what happened and took Venom back to where he belonged. However, according to a recent report Tom Holland’s Spiderman had a cameo in the sequel… in the script.
Venom 2: More of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man was Cut Out!
While speaking with GQ Magazine, Venom: Let There Be Carnage director Andy Serkis discussed the sequel’s post credit scene and Tom Holland’s surprise cameo. The director-actor said, “It was unsure as to the level of involvement that world would meet with our world.” He further added, “There were drafts which had more, a little more, of the other. The unspoken. It was very, very carefully chosen.” These specific comments from Serkis align with what Marvel President Kevin Feigi had said about Venom 2’s Spider-Man cameo in the past.
Feigi revealed, “There was a lot of coordination — and if you don’t know all the coordination yet, I’m not going to be the one to tell you — but yes, between Sony and Marvel and the ‘Venom’ team and the ‘No Way Home’ team… We worked together on it.” Serkis himself had revealed in the past that what was the significance of that post credit scene. In that interview Serkis had revealed, “The purpose of the sequel’s post-credits scene is to let fans know that the MCU and Sony’s Spider-Man universe are going to somehow collide but they wanted to do it in a way that it still leaves so much open.”
In another interview the director had teased a possibility of a crossover, “Venom can come up against before he gets to, let’s place this very clearly, before he gets to Spider-Man.” If all goes well then maybe we will see Spider-Man and Venom collide or join forces on a film with a grand scale like Avengers: Secret Wars where multiple cameos will be made. Reportedly, Marvel wants to top the Endgame Avengers Assemble moment. Well, we’ll see if they can do that but that’s it from me today.
