The Sandman Season 2

Netflix and its highs and lows. As Netflix is desperately trying to get their early glory back they’re making significant changes in their plan of action. Along with these changes, the streaming giant just like any other nervous network began to cut down weight to fly higher. The platform cancelled many shows that were once confirmed to get a renewal. Most recent to face the axe was 1899 from the creators of Dark. As Netflix was swinging their axe at everything the fans of Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman were worried on whether that show will also meet the axe or would survive for a second season. Thankfully, that question was answered and the show was absolutely safe. At least, for the second season. However, after that relaxing update no news about the second season was heard which concerned fans. Well, don’t worry anymore. As Neil Gaiman has given us a great update.

The Sandman Season 2 Will Start Filming Soon!

A fan recently asked Neil Gaiman on Tumblr about the pre-production of Season 2 and the English author gave a hearty update. The conversation looked something like,

  • Q: “Hi Mr Gaiman, hope you’re having a good day! I’ve not seen or heard much news on ‘The Sandman’ Season 2, could you perhaps give us a little news on how that’s coming on if that’s okay? Thanks!”
  • Gaiman: “Scripts are written. We are casting the first episode we will be shooting. Sets are being designed.”

While talking to Variety, Netflix’s head of UCAN scripted TV Peter Friedlander revealed some crucial piece of information about the upcoming season, “I’m very excited about what we have in store and we have made some great decisions around where this will go. So it’s a stay-tuned and watch. Like you, I am a major ‘Sandman’ fan and to be able to watch Neil and Allan do what they do is extraordinary.” Friedlander further revealed, “I think what they did with Season 1 — it’s refreshing, it’s breathtaking, it’s iconic. It’s all of those descriptions and to know that it connected with audiences is just so rewarding.”

The Variety spokesperson did question Netflix’s decision to not call the upcoming season a Season Two but rather a continuation of The Sandman world. While Friedlander remained tight-lipped he did give a reasonable explanation,

  • Variety: “It’s not called Season 2 because it’s going to be handled more in line with the comics, where it’s ‘volumes’ and based on the story in the issues, rather than being labeled as a season? Is that it?”
  • Friedlander’s response: “There are decisions that haven’t been made, but we are considering batching approaches. Everything’s on the table when it comes to ‘Sandman.’ It’s an innovative show.”

The Sandman ranked eighth on the list of Most Popular Shows on Netflix of 2022. The Netflix show has an enormously talented cast including, Tom Sturridge leading the pack as Sandman alongside Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer Morningstar, Vivienne Acheampong, Boyd Holbrook, Charles Dance, Jenna Coleman, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Mason Alexander Park and David Thewlis.

All eleven episodes of The Sandman are currently available for streaming on Netflix. Season Two doesn’t have a release date yet.
