2018 was the year when Warner Bros. decided to give us some underwater action as they released the shark survival thriller – The Meg starring Jason Statham. The film was roasted by critics for being another shark thriller that doesn’t even come close to Jaws. While I’m not a big fan of Jaws, I can agree that the film was strongly mediocre. It was a very forgettable venture. Not for Warner Bros. though, as it performed well at the box office collecting $530.2 million on a budget of somewhere around $130-178 million. This is when the studio decided to give us a sequel to an already mediocre film. What fun! Anyways, 5 years later- today, we have gotten the first official trailer for the sequel and it couldn’t have been worse in my opinion.
Meg 2: The Trench- A Truly Terrible Trailer!
I have a very simple issue with the trailer. You can’t show all that. For a film banking on the thrill of this underwater adventure, the amount of surprising attacks that they’ve revealed is surprising. Either they have too many of them or they know that the film is not made well so they’re putting all the cool stuff in the trailer to hype up the audience into filling seats. My second issue is the tone of the film. I know it is an adventure starring Jason Statham but they’ve made the entire vibe of the trailer into a comedy or even worse dark comedy.
On more than one occasion, people say nothing will happen and then the shark swallows them whole, it was funny not scary. The atmosphere of dread is missing. I checked out The Meg’s trailer immediately and realised that the first half of that trailer was brilliant- almost perfect. The way the shark was build up to, after which it introduced everyone and changed the mood but I really liked what they did in the first half. I cannot fathom what they’ve done with this trailer. If fans lap it up then great but in my opinion this truly ruins the experience of the film. I’m not afraid of the shark anymore- what can be worse for a shark film?
