The sequel to the 2019’s Shazam has been a box office failure for DC. This marks the second consecutive box failure for DC. It seems like the damage done by Black Adam was too much for audiences to put their faith back in DC. The sequel made on a budget of $110-125 million has only made $121.1 million in the 21 days of its theatrical run. If Zachary Levi’s future is really dependent on the success of the second movie, then I think it is fair to say that there is no future anymore. This is not just me saying. Even Warner Bros. is aware of this as they have decided to release the film digitally after just 21 days in the theatres. Well, the final figures of Shazam 2: Fury of the Gods are in and it turns out that it is not just a box office failure but the biggest in DCEU history.
Shazam 2: Fury of the Gods Is A Box Office Disaster!
Whatever DC fans or The Rock may tell you but trust me based on the total expenses and the total theatrical earnings of Black Adam, the film was a box office bomb. DC was looking to bounce back in 2023, but with Shazam 2: Fury of the Gods’s theatrical collection the car is just going downhill for DC. The film made on a budget of $110 million earned only $133.4 million at the worldwide box office. This is the lowest grossing film in the DCEU’s history since kicking off in 2013.
The first Shazam! movie was made only on a budget of $90 million and made $363 million worldwide, almost $200 million more than the sequel. Not only did it earn over $200 million less than its predecessor, but it was also out-grossed by two films that were released day-and-date on HBO Max during the COVID-19 pandemic (Wonder Woman 1984 & The Suicide Squad). The reason for the sequel’s horrible run at the box office was that it was inconsequential to the upcoming DC movies.
Shazam: Fury of the Gods is currently available for digital purchase.
