Johnny Depp is one of the most famous actors working in Hollywood. I won’t say whether he is famous for good things or bad, that depends on the reader. Although, I think it is fair to say that the perception of the star has demeaned after the entire Amber Heard fiasco even if he won the court case in the end. Which is exactly why the box office dependency of the actor was challenged, rendering movie studios hesitant of investing in him. The actor’s next few ventures were crucial for him as the audience reception for these films will determine the trajectory of his career. Jeanne du Barry is Depp’s first screen appearance since the trial. The film is helmed by French director Maïwenn and will see him playing King Louis XV. Jeanne du Barry premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, so, what was the response to the film? Let’s find out.
Jeanne du Barry First Reactions – Overwhelmingly Positive Response?
Johnny Depp’s comeback film has apparently received a 7- minute long standing ovation at Cannes Film Festival. Depp was surprised by the amazing response to the film, acknowledged the audience by waving from the balcony while Maïwenn broke down into tears and addressed the audience: “I want to share this moment with my lover, with my producer, with Le Pacte. It was a production that was difficult to finance … and I want to share this moment with all my team across the theater.”
Robbie Collin (Daily Telegraph {UK}) – “The central relationship never convinces – it all just feels like a performance, put on for the benefit of the courtiers and by extension, us.” Original Score: 2/5
Peter Debruge (Variety) – “Clumsy as the film can be, Maïwenn taps into the emotional core of a most unusual relationship, such that we mourn how and why it eventually dissolves.”
Ben Croll (indieWire) – “A perfectly serviceable entry in a genre born of the stage and perfected by Old Hollywood: the star showcase.” Original Score: B-
Lisa Nesselson (Screen International) – “This is not great or memorable filmmaking but the power of the story and some of the performances make up for that.”
Peter Bradshaw (Guardian) – “It’s an entertaining spectacle, only partly aware of its own vanity.” Original Score: 3/5
Jordan Mintzer (Hollywood Reporter) – “The paradox of Jeanne du Barry is that, despite the daring life it’s based on and the daring casting of the semi-blacklisted Depp, this is a movie that winds up playing it too safe.”
Jeanne du Barry doesn’t have release date for the US.
