Indiana Jones 5 or Indiana Jones and The Dial of Destiny is the film that has revived the franchise as well as the one which will end it. No, I don’t mean in it sarcastically. The James Mangold directorial is Indy’s final outing on the big screen. The franchise was a brainchild of two of the most revered filmmakers of the golden era of Hollywood- George Lucas and Steven Spielberg. The film series started right after the success of Star Wars and the first film of the series Raiders of the Lost Ark was a milestone in cinema and it is still considered to be a classic that hasn’t aged a day since its release. The original trilogy was amazing, however, after 19 years a fourth installment was released which paled in comparison to its predecessors.
Cut to 12 years later. We’re getting the last film of the franchise. This is the first film not directed by Steven Spielberg in the pentalogy. There was a lot of effort put into the film, as much as de-aging Harrison Ford. The cast of the film looks fantastic. So, with everything going well for the film you’d expect it to be an absolute summer blockbuster. Well, the first reactions might say otherwise.
Indiana Jones and The Dial of Destiny First Reactions: Not Worth The Hype?
Jo-Ann Titmarsh (London Evening Standard) –“There are some genuinely moving scenes as we see this fantastic character finally getting ready to hang up his hat for the last time. Thanks, Indy, it’s been quite a ride.” Original Score: 3/5
Richard Lawson (Vanity Fair) – “One can feel the four credited screenwriters grasping at inspiration and coming up short. What they did manage to make would be perfectly fine as a standalone adventure film starring some other character, but it’s not worthy of the whip.”
Kevin Maher (Times {UK}) –“The good news is that it’s not as poor as Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. The bad news is that it’s not much better.” Original Score: 2/5
John Nugent (Empire Magazine)- “If you join him for the ride, it feels like a fitting goodbye to cinema’s favourite grave-robber.” Original Score: 4/5
David Ehrlich (indieWire) –““Yesterday belongs to us,” someone says at one point, and when it comes to Indiana Jones, yesterday always will. The problem is that it already did, and today feels like a complete waste of time.” Original Score: C
Geoffrey Macnab (Independent {UK})- “Harrison Ford is the hero of the hour. He never loses either his scowl or his doggedness. He plays even the flimsiest scenes with conviction and dry humour. His performance carries the movie.” Original Score: 3/5
Robbie Collin (Daily Telegraph {UK})- “It ultimately feels like a counterfeit of priceless treasure: the shape and the gleam of it might be superficially convincing for a bit, but the shabbier craftsmanship gets all the more glaring the longer you look.” Original Score: 2/5
Peter Bradshaw (Guardian)- “Indiana Jones still has a certain old-school class.” Original Score: 3/5
