After almost half a year, we finally got the update that James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water will release on Disney+ from 7th June 2023. This has to be the longest gap between the theatrical and streaming release date of any film releasing post the pandemic. The film is the biggest blockbuster of this decade despite the long 13 years gap between the original and the sequel. Made on a production budget of $460 million, the film grossed $2.32 billion worldwide. Actually the film’s total budget is around $1 billion but keeping in mind the total revenue generated by the film it still generated a profit of $500 million. However, a recent report tells us that Disney cannot release the sequel exclusively on Disney+ because of a deal. Let’s what is this all about.
Avatar: The Way of Water Will Stream On Two OTT Platforms!
Because of a deal between Disney and Warner Bros. to share the streaming rights for the 20th Century Fox’s theatrical release. Although, the deal was only valid for films that released before the end of 2022. Which is exactly why Disney won’t be able to put The Way of Water on Disney+. In fact, the company would have to share the film as it would release on Disney+ and Warner Bros’ Max on the same day. This would definitely put a damper on Disney’s plans as they can no longer market the film as an exclusive release.
Previously Disney shared the streaming of Ron’s Gone Wrong and West Side Story with HBO Max. Although, they were not big releases like Avatar 2. This deal won’t continue further as it was only limited to releases before the end of 2022. This hurts Disney more as most of the 20th Century releases are mature films and Disney+ restricts its content because of their kid friendly reputation. So, half the films go to Disney’s half owned Hulu. The King’s Man came to both services (Hulu and HBO Max) on February 18, 2022.
Avatar: The Way of Water will start streaming on Disney+ from June 7 2023.
