Steven Spielberg and George Lucas’ brainchild seems to have generated no hype at the box office at all. The last film of Indiana Jones franchise was roasted by fans and critics alike. The box office performance of the film was disappointing as well. However, it seems like the new film will perform even worse. A new report from The Hollywood Reporter predicts that Dial of Destiny will have $60-$70 million domestic opening weekend for the new movie. Compared to the $100 million taken by Crystal Skull in its first three days of release in 2008 that appears quite bleak. Kingdom of the Crystal Skull ended up taking in $317 million domestically after its big Memorial Day opening.
This news come to us around the same time when we have been hearing rumors of Indiana Jones 5 being the costliest film ever to be produced by Lucasfilm, bearing a price tag of $294.7 million. Certainly not an ideal way kick off the box office run. Well, this was just the domestic collection. Maybe the international markets will save the film? Appears not. The worldwide projections of the film are out and they don’t look good.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny Isn’t Bringing Home The Big Numbers!
As per a new report from Deadline, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny will open at the box office this week with underwhelming numbers. The film will earn $140 million at the worldwide box office. This includes a domestic opening weekend projected at $65 million, which is in line to previous reports. This cumulative number would be great for any other film but for a movie mounted on a budget of nearly $300 million, not very much. It is barely 50% of the budget and add to that the 50% cut that the exhibitors (theatres owners) will take.
Then the film practically has an opening weekend of only $70 million for the makers. Kingdom of the Crystal Skull wound up being a box office success, grossing $790.7 million worldwide against a $185 million budget. This was despite some criticism from fans of the franchise, with many believing it to be the worst Indiana Jones movie. While there is some criticism to Dial of Destiny as well but the film is supposed to give us an exciting and satisfying conclusion to Indy’s journey.
Due to marketing costs and theaters keeping a cut of the box office, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny may need to make as much as $800 million worldwide to break even. Based on the current trajectory of the film, this number seems far, far away.
Indiana Jones and The Dial of Destiny is scheduled to release on 30th June 2023.
