After entertaining as Harley Quinn, Margot Robbie is now tapped in to play the lead in the Ocean’s Eleven prequel movie set in the 1960s. Robbie is reuniting with her Bombshell(2019) director and four-time Emmy winner Jay Roach, the critically acclaimed drama which won her a best supporting Oscar nomination. Robbie and Roach were also producing the film while Carrie Solomon is writing the script. Apart from Ocean’s prequel, Robbie is extensively working with WB in recent times and is playing the lead in the studio’s first live-action Barbie film directed by Greta Gerwig and is set to release in 2023.

The plot is yet unknown and kept under wraps on how this film connects with the other films in the franchise, though sources state the story takes place in the 1960s across Europe. The film is currently set to start production in the spring of 2023.

The Ocean’s heist franchise is started by David Soderbergh. The first Ocean’s Eleven(2001) film is a loose remake of the 1960’s film of the same name and had George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts, Matt Damon as part of the cast. The first film is set in Las Vegas as Danny Ocean and his gang of thieves tries to commit a heist by robbing three casinos of a owner. The second film Ocean’s Twelve(2004) takes place across Europe as Danny and his gang try to execute three heists to meet a deadline set by a casino owner they robbed previously. Ocean’s Thirteen(2007) film is set on a casino opening night while Danny and his gang try to inflict huge losses and ruin the owner Willy Bank(Al Pacino), after he double crosses one of the member of Danny’s gang. Julia Roberts didn’t return for Ocean’s Thirteen over disagreements about her role with Soderbergh.
All three Ocean films received positive-mixed reviews from critics while the fans and general audience showed more praise and love. It remains as one of the most successful movie franchise for Warner Bros, all three films combined grossing over a billion.
What about Ocean’s Eight Sequel?
Apart from the three Ocean films, there’s a spinoff called Ocean’s 8 starring an all-female ensemble with Anna Hathaway, Sandra Bullock, Rihanna, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Cate Blanchett as part of the cast. Released exactly 11 years after the last Ocean film, on June 8, 2018, the film is commercially successful and received positive reviews from critics. Sandra Bullock leads the cast as Debbie Ocean, sister of the late Danny Ocean.
It seems like currently there are no plans for a direct sequel to Ocean’s Eight or Ocean’s Thirteen. The latter might not happen unless Soderbergh returns to direct, which seems unlikely at the moment, but the door is still open.
Looks like WB is creating an Ocean Cinematic Universe following the family of Danny and Debbie Ocean’s ancestors with this 1960s prequel film.
