Barbie Crosses $1 billion!

Despite having two new releases this weekend, Barbie is unshakable on the box office throne. Barbie continues to remain #1 while Oppenheimer follows up at #2, three weeks in a row. First up, the two new releases Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem and Meg 2: The Trench are on track for a $28.8 million and $23.4 million opening weekend respectively. Barbie is predicted to collect $62.5 million over its third weekend. These are of course the domestic figures. Combining these with the international collections Barbie was suspected to cross $1 billion at the worldwide box office this weekend. So, did it? Yes, it is all over Twitter. My feed is blowing up as no one can keep their calm. No one expected the first live action Barbie movie to become a $1 billion venture. Rest assured a franchise is in the making.

Barbie Is This Summer’s Biggest Release!

With its third weekend at the box office, Barbie has crossed $1 billion at the worldwide box office. This makes the Greta Gerwig directorial the second highest grossing film of the year, just behind The Super Mario Bros. Movie ($1.35 billion). Barbie also happens to be only the second film to breach the $1 billion mark this year. The Margot Robbie led film has become the first film directed solely by a woman to gross over $1 billion at the box office.

Barbie’s figures are second highest for any female led movie in cinema history, beating Wonder Woman’s $828 million but lagging behind Captain Marvel’s $1.13 billion. I can’t believe how right Margot Robbie was when she pitched the film to Warner Bros’ executives. Her exact words were: “I think I told them it would make a billion dollars, which maybe I was overselling, but we had a movie to make.” Considering the current hold the film has over the box office, it is destined to beat The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

Barbie’s script has been co-written with Greta Gerwig and her partner Noah Baumbach (Marriage Story, Frances Ha, White Noise). Margot Robbie will star in the titular role with Ryan Gosling playing Ken, Barbie’s male counterpart. The rest of the cast includes, America Ferrera, Simu Liu, Issa Rae, Ncuti Gatwa, Alexandra Shipp, Ariana Greenblatt, Sharon Rooney, Ana Cruz Kayne, Emma Mackay and Hari Nef.

Barbie is playing in theatres near you.
