James Wan is truly a gifted filmmaker as he is responsible for the birth of Hollywood’s three major horror franchises. While I still consider The Conjuring and Saw to be his best, Insidious is a really unique film as well. However, the unneeded sequels to follow lost the peculiarity. The quality of the sequels was mediocre and they simply became means for the studio to get some cash. After a while, I think the audiences saw this. The box office performances of the films started to drop which is the only way the studio understood that the audiences have had enough of this. So, finally the makers decided to end the franchise with one final movie – Insidious: The Red Door. The marketing of the film built it up like this is the best Insidious that we’ve ever seen.
But the critics’ reviews made it pretty clear that the studio simply wanted to get some more cash before they bury the franchise for good. However, it appears that despite bad reviews Insidious 5 did very well at the box office.
Why Was Insidious: The Red Door So Successful?
Insidious: The Red Door has done extremely well at the box office as Blumhouse revealed that the summer release has now surpassed the $183 million mark, making it the top-grossing horror film of 2023. Blumhouse’s viral sensation M3GAN had been the horror champ of the year so far with $180 million, before the fifth Insidious film nudged past it. The year’s other breakout horror hit, Scream 6, now comes in third with $169 million grossed worldwide.
Unless Saw X and The Nun II surpasses Insidious 5 at the box office, it looks like The Red Door will remain as the horror king of 2023. These are the only two horror films with the audience to take it pass Insidious. Interestingly, both the threats belong to franchises created by James Wan. The man’s a genius. Exorcist: Believer belongs to another big Hollywood horror franchise but the trailer impressed no one so the chances of it topping Insidious are slim. However, as the film will release near Halloween you never know.
