Lil Nas X With his Grammys

Everybody has heard of Lil Nas X. The hitmaking rapper who has been known to provoke controversy and constructive conversations about queer politics and representation is now back in the news, after a period of more or less a muted presence on the Internet. The Old Town Road rapper is going to make his foray in the world of film through his documentary, Long Live Montero. The documentary is supposed to make its debut at TIFF 2023, and fans are extremely excited about this milestone in the musician’s life.

The documentary is described as “a remarkably intimate portrait of an artist navigating identity, family, expectations and acceptance, all while reflecting on his place within the legacy of Black, queer performers”. It was filmed when the artist was on his first tour, and it gives unfettered access to his performances and behind the scenes moments. The documentary is directed by Carlos Lopez Estrada and Zac Manuel, who have both been nominated for Academy Awards before.

The CEO of TIFF, Cameron Bailey, said about the film, “‘Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero’ is a triumphant ode to the extraordinary power of self-expression, music, and identity …In this groundbreaking documentary, we witness Lil Nas X challenging boundaries and reshaping the artistic landscape. The film’s captivating journey underscores the profound impact of Lil Nas X, who fearlessly brings audiences together through the universal language of music. We are thrilled to host Lil Nas X at TIFF this year.”

It will be interesting to see what happens when Montero Hill, or Lil Nas X brings his documentary with so many powerful creative heads behind it for us to see.
