Rachel Sennott and Ayo Edebiri in Bottoms

Emma Seligman’s new queer-comedy, Bottoms, has been certified 98% fresh at Rotten Tomatoes, making it the highest-rated movie of this summer. Written by Seligman and Rachel Sennott, who also stars in the film, it has opened to rave reviews from critics and movie-goers alike, for bold, bloody and almost ballistic in its humor. Predicted to be one of the breakout hits from the indie scene this year which already has amassed a strong fanbase on social media, Bottoms has all the makings of a future cult classic.

Bottoms – Plot, Cast, Reviews and More

A teen sex comedy, Bottoms follows PJ (Sennott) and Josie (Ayo Edebiri, The Bear) who are unpopular best friends and decide to start a fight club at high school with the intention of meeting girls through it. However, things go off the rails when the most popular students begin to bash each other up under the pretext of self defence. Besides Sennott and Edebiri, the movie also stars Nicolas Galitzine, Havana Rose Liu, etc in leading roles. Sennott described the movie as, “two girls in a classic American football town who start a fight club under the guise of female empowerment, but it’s actually so they can have sex with cheerleaders.”

With music from Charli XCX and Leo Birenbirg, the movie is Seligman’s second movie after Shiva Baby, another critically acclaimed film which also starred Sennott.

Bottoms has opened to critical praise and approval. The film apparently manages to be deeply satirical and also incredibly honest, with Sennott, Edebiri and Galitzine picking up the most praise out of all the cast. Variety wrote about the film, “Bottoms is unlike any high-school comedy you’ve ever seen. It’s a satire of victimization, a satire of violence, and a satire of itself. It walks a tightrope between sensitivity and insanity (with a knowing bit of inanity), and it’s full of moments that are defiantly what we once used to call incorrect”. The movie’s Metacritic score is around 79, thus marking it as a film with generally favorable reviews.

Bottoms releases in selected theatres on August 25, 2023, before going for an expanded release on the 1st of September. If you have any questions regarding Bottoms, feel free to ask in the comments below.
