Director Denis Villeneuve views Dune as more than just a heroic story. He wanted to make two Dune movies back-to-back, but Warner Bros. declined the plan. However, after the success of the first film in 2021, they gave a positive signal to continue Dune: Part Two. Even after the demise of Frank Herbert (the writer of the Dune book series), his son Brian Herbert continued the story. So, if Part Two is successful, Villeneuve ha expressed he wants to continue making the series.
It “Would be the Dream” to make a Third Dune Film
In an interview with Empire Magazine, he shares that he wishes to continue making films on this striking desert world. “If I succeed in making a trilogy, that would be the dream,” said Villeneuve regarding the Dune follow-up. “Dune Messiah was written in reaction to the fact that people perceived Paul Atreides as a hero, which is not what [Herbert] wanted to do. My adaptation [of Dune] is closer to his idea that it’s actually a warning.” Denis Villeneuve also explained that he would move on to the next project after Dune 3. “After that, the books become more…esoteric,” he said. He confirmed that Dune 3 is more than just a wish in his head. “There are words on paper,” he revealed.
We can’t wait for the release of Dune: Part Two. It will be more of an epic war film, as Villeneuve revealed while sharing the trailer at CinemaCon in April. “Part One is more of a contemplative movie. Part Two is an action-packed, epic war movie. It is much more dense. We went to all new locations. The film was supposed to release this November. However, due to the ongoing Hollywood strikes, it got pushed back to March 15, 2024.
