Barbie Crosses New Box Office Milestone, Beats The Avengers 1 and 2

Who would’ve thought over a year ago that a live action Barbie movie is going to turn into a global sensation. I remember getting leaks of the film and sending them to my friends and they were like, “who cares? It is just a Barbie movie.” Cut to a year later and those same friends dressed up in pink to watch the Barbie movie with me. I agree, most of the credit for this goes to the Barbenheimer trend on social media that hyped up both the films in such a manner that it looks like both overperformed at the box office. Still, becoming the Highest Grossing film of the year is no small feat and Barbie should get all the credit for it. However, the Greta Gerwig’s summer smash isn’t stopping there. With each new weekend, the film crosses a new milestone at the box office. This time it has crossed The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron in two separate lists.

Barbie Crosses The Avengers And Avengers: Age of Ultron!

According to Box Office Mojo, Barbie has crossed the $1.4 billion threshold as its worldwide collection now stands at $1.402 billion after eight weeks at the box office. This figure means that Barbie has crossed Avengers: Age of Ultron’s $1.4 billion at the box office and entered the top 15 films of all time list. Barbie stands at 14th place at the moment. The Greta Gerwig directorial had long crossed Age of Ultron’s domestic numbers ($459 million). However, what is is impressive is that Barbie also set to cross The Avengers at the domestic box office.

The Avengers stans $623 million and Barbie’s domestic figures are $620 million for now. The film will surely go past the Marvel film to become the 11th highest-grossing release in North American history. Barbie’s next two targets are Frozen 2’s $1.45 billion and Top Gun: Maverick’s $1.49 billion. It will be a difficult chase for Barbie but there is no reason to believe that the film won’t surpass these blockbusters as well. Here is a list of Top 15 Highest Grossing Films Worldwide:

This summer has Barbenheimer frenzy. Barbie and Oppenheimer released at a time when summer 2023 ticket sales were down 7% from the same time in 2022 after films like The Flash underperformed at the box office. Since the beginning of “Barbenheimer,” the summer gross drastically improved, with the tally now standing $4.028 billion, the most since the summer of 2019, which hit $4.34 billion thanks, in part, to The Lion King and Spider-Man: Far From Home, which each eclipsed the billion-dollar mark globally. Both the blockbusters have triggered a spike in ticket sales by 16.6% helping Hollywood to go back to pre-pandemic levels for the first time in 4 years.

The film’s script has been co-written with Greta Gerwig and her partner Noah Baumbach (Marriage Story, Frances Ha, White Noise). Margot Robbie will star in the titular role with Ryan Gosling playing Ken, Barbie’s male counterpart. The rest of the cast includes, America Ferrera, Simu Liu, Issa Rae, Ncuti Gatwa, Alexandra Shipp, Ariana Greenblatt, Sharon Rooney, Ana Cruz Kayne, Emma Mackay and Hari Nef.
