The Nun II Box Office Collection!

The Nun 2 is the ninth instalment of The Conjuring universe. The Michael Chaves directorial has opened up to better reviews than most of the films in the franchise. Its predecessor itself was critically panned but still managed to collect $365 million at the box office, more than both The Conjuring films. The Nun remains to be the highest grosser of the horror universe. One can only imagine the hype created by The Conjuring 2 for Valak that resulted in such glorious numbers despite poor reviews. However, after being thoroughly disappointed by The Nun, fans were cautious for The Nun II, the expectations were astronomically low. So, did the decent reviews help the film? Did the film open similar to the The Nun? No. Although, The Nun II did a have blockbuster opening weekend.

The Nun 2 Kicks Barbenheimer Out Of Top 5!

The Nun had opened to a $53.8 million franchise record. The Nun 2 doesn’t measure up to those standards but has generated strong figures nonetheless. The film has acquired #1 spot at the box office with a $32.4 million opening weekend, domestically. This is the second best opening for a horror film this year. The sequel just lagged behind Scream VI’s enormous $44.5 million opening. However, The Nun II did surpass M3GAN’s $30 million opening. The Nun II scared away Barbie (#5) from the Top 3, for the first time in eight weeks.

This resulted in Oppenheimer’s exit from the Top 5 as well. The Christopher Nolan directorial fell to the eight spot. The film dethroned The Equalizer 3, which had led the box office on its Labor Day weekend debut. The Denzel Washington action flick secured an additional $12.1 million in its second weekend, accumulating a total of $61.9 million. The third and fourth spots went to the fellow newcomers My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 with $10 million, and the Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan which garnered a total of $7.5 million in its four-day opening since its premiere on Thursday.

The Nun II wasn’t just a huge deal in the USA but also opened up to a massive $85 million opening haul worldwide, where it dethroned former champion Oppenheimer. The film is now racing against Gran Turismo ($93 million) to be first to reach the $100 million milestone and is also vying for the title of the highest-grossing horror film of the year alongside Insidious: The Red Door, which currently sits at the top with $188 million. Considering the positive word of mouth and little to no competition, The Nun II will definitely outgross Insidious: The Red Door.

What has to be seen is whether The Nun II’s collection is challenged by another upcoming horror flick – The Exorcist: Believer. Similar to The Nun II, the film is part of a huge IP in the horror genre. The Exorcist: Believer will be a direct sequel to The Exorcist (1973). I think it all comes down to Believer’s quality, as if the film is celebrated by the critics like the first one, then there is no stopping for the sequel.
