American post-apocalyptic horror drama The Walking Dead is based on a comic book series of the name by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore, and Charlie Adlard. This series features a massive cast as survivors of a zombie apocalypse. All of them are trying to stay alive under the threat of attacks from zombies, “walkers.” With the breakdown of modern civilization, they must confront other survivors who built communities with their sets of morals and laws, sometimes leading to conflict between them. This series is the first TV series within the franchise. The series premiered on October 31, 2010, and concluded on November 20, 2022, after 11 seasons.

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon is the fifth spin-off and overall sixth TV series of the franchise. Daryl washes ashore in France and struggles to recall how he got there and why. The series follows his journey across a broken but resilient France as Daryl longs to go back home. As he commences this journey, though, the bonds he forms along the way entangle his eventual plan. Norman Reedus reprises his role as Daryl Dixon, alongside Louis Puech Scigliuzzi, Clemence Poesy, Romain Leivi, Laika Blanc-Francard, Anne Charrier, and Adam Nagaitis playing new characters. The young heroes must try to fight the zombies and escape the trap while managing their interpersonal relationships. This series provides a new take on the zombie apocalypse, focusing on a unique setting and cast for the genre. Recent reports hint that All of Us are Dead Season 2 will premiere around mid-2024.

Falling Skies

Like The Walking Dead, Falling Skies is a sci-fi drama that focuses on a small group of survivors against a force. In this scenario, alien invaders have attacked planet Earth and damaged most of the world’s population. With the infrastructure and armies destroyed, a group of civilians tries to fight the alien attack. The series starred Noah Wyle as a history professor turned leader and aired on the TNT network. Falling Skies ran for five seasons and leaned into an alien invasion angle.

Helix

Helix is a sci-fi horror series that left a huge impression on the viewers. It follows a group of CDC scientists traveling to the Arctic to investigate an enigmatic virus. The team discovers the virus kills outright or transforms the host into a zombie-like carrier. The team must attempt to find a way of surviving this battle against the virus while fighting the corporations who are trying to conceal the cause of the outbreak. This setting and storyline offer a new spin to the genre.

Kingdom

South Korean television series are very common on Netflix nowadays, however, Kingdom (2019) by writer Kim Eun-hee was the first original South Korean series on Netflix. Unlike most zombie narratives, this horror drama takes place hundreds of years ago. In the 16th-century medieval province, young prince Lee Chang must investigate an unknown disease. Chang must fight the undead and keep his political rivals in check in a war simultaneously. Both seasons of Kingdom were well-received by critics.

Station Eleven

HBO Max’s Station Eleven is a miniseries adaption of Emily St. Mandel’s best-selling novel of the same name. It follows society’s future after a deadly epidemic kills the majority of the human population. The story revolves around characters both before and after the collapse, like the viewers witnessed in The Walking Dead’s flashbacks. The storyline includes a cult of lost children, post-apocalyptic Shakespearian repertory theatre, and a community built in an airport. You must watch the show as it explores the purpose of connection and culture in a dystopian world.

Sweet Tooth

Sweet Tooth is based on the comic book of the same name by Jeff Lemire. It is set after an illness called the Sick. It killed the majority of the world’s population. However, this world is filled with mysterious half-animal hybrids, mysterious half-humans, rather than zombies. It follows a young half-boy, half-deer who gangs up with survivalists to seek the mother he never knew in this dystopian wilderness. The surviving humans being afraid of the sickness treat the hybrid animal population as outcasts.

The Last of Us

Video game fans are aware of the The Last of Us series from developer Naughty Dog. HBO’s adaptation of the first game thrilled the viewers as well as the game fans. The show follows Ellie and Joel as they battle their way through the infected in a desire to create a cure and find peace in a dystopian world. If the morally complex characters and themes enticed you while watching The Walking Dead, you will certainly enjoy The Last of Us.
