Outer Banks premiered in 2020, followed by Season 2 in 2021 and Season 3 in 2023. The story follows a group of teenagers, known as Pogues searching for treasure in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Even though the filming of Season 4 is suspended due to the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, now we have more details on Season 4. According to Outer Banks showrunner and creator Josh Pate, it was necessary to set up a new trilogy. “Yeah, we’re going to fill in some gaps in the 18 months and we felt like we needed to migrate them out of school. We think about the first three [seasons] as a trilogy and then we’re starting over on [another sort of] trilogy now. We just needed to clear the decks.”
Plot Details of Outer Banks Season 4
1. New Villain – While the group was never without hurdles, their primary foes were always Ward and Rafe Cameron, Sarah Cameron’s greedy and desperate father and brother respectively. Though Ward died at the end of Season 3, Rafe is still breathing and will possibly return in some form. Considering the threat the Camerons posed and the intricacies of the character, Season 4 needs to present a distinct threat to John B. and the gang. Though it’s a tall order, undoubtedly the first three seasons managed to set the bar high.
2. New Treasure Hunt – The treasure hunt introduced at the end of Season 3 involved Blackbeard or Edward Teach. When asked why Blackbeard was chosen, Josh Pate admitted there was a need for a new adventure. “We were joking about it just a second ago and needed something concise, a one-liner for the last little bit. We needed a name or an idea for a new adventure that could be conveyed in a word. Timing-wise, with the flow of the episode, you needed to hit and go.” He also noted that the Blackbeard narrative will be different than usual. “And it’s organic to the Outer Banks, ‘so OK, we’ll play that.’ But it’s not going to be the usual Blackbeard story, put it that way.”
3. New Life Situation – Season 4 will certainly show more of the Pogues’ lives and showrunner Shannon Burke confirmed that the cast members “make suggestions all the time, too.” Jonas Pate acknowledged other suggestions to become part of the show. “Like, Poguelandia flag was a Rudy Pankow ad-lib. I mean, JJ the character is capable of pretty much anything. Season 4 is going to be all about that, really.” JJ’s nature has been a storyline of all three seasons and it still has more to tell. It would be nice to see him take a central role now that John B’s original story reached its end.
The first three seasons of Outer Banks are streaming now on Netflix.
