The Old Guard 2

The Old Guard 2 is set to release on Netflix soon. Based on the comic book series of the same name, the show stars Charlize Theron in the lead role. Theron’s Andy is a thousand-year-old regenerative mercenary who has taken on missions to prevent evil. Releasing in July 2020, the first film is sitting at a solid 80% on Rotten Tomatoes. Here is what we know so far about The Old Guard 2.

What Will Happen in The Old Guard 2?

The immortal warriors are ready to stun the viewers with a thrilling tale. However, this would be different from the first film as Charlize Theron’s Andy may no longer be impervious to death. Another major story to explore is the return of Veronica Ngo’s Quynh. Throughout the original film, she was thought to have been dead. However, setting her up for the sequel, the former The Old Guard member reappeared in the post-credit scene.

In an interview with Late Night With Seth Myers, Theron teased the relationship of Andy and Quynh. “There’s obviously a relationship there that we didn’t really explore in this film. So I’m excited if we get the chance to make another one, to explore that, because then we’re just adding another female into the mix, which I think will make it really interesting.” With Andy’s immortality apparently running out, it could be a difficult reunion.

Since The Old Guard followed its comic book counterpart closely, The Old Guard 2 will likely do the same with the comic book sequel titled Force Multiplied. The synopsis of the second comic story hints at a villain from the past. “When you’ve waged war as long as Andy and her squad, you’ve gotten your hands more than bloody. Now, the day has come to confront the sins of the past. But as Nile struggles to make peace with the team, the last person Andy ever expected to see again returns to challenge not only what Andy believes in, but what the team is willing to fight for.”

Cast of The Old Guard 2

All the main cast members will return for the upcoming The Old Guard 2. Charlize Theron returns as the Old Guard mercenary Andy aka Andromache of Scythia. The actor has hinted that there will be some changes in the character. “We needed something that felt like time had passed, so for that, you go with the ol’ mullet.” Chiwetel Ejiofor is also returning as CIA operative James Copley. The other returning actors include:

  • KiKi Layne as Nile
  • Matthias Schoenaerts as Booker
  • Marwan Kenzari as Joe
  • Luca Marinelli as Nicky
  • Veronica Ngo as Quynh

Uma Thurman and Henry Golding are two new names popping up for the first time. We don’t know their roles yet but some have speculated they could play the villains.

When Will It Come Out?

Following the release of the first film, writer Greg Rucka revealed he has ideas regarding the sequel. In July 2020, he pointed to some of the hints seen at the end of the original film. “In case of sequel, break glass. It’s very straightforward. You want another one? Here’s a way to get into it. We wanted to say ‘Look, the mythology is bigger than you think it is. There is more going on.” The filming kicked off in June 2022 and despite the set fire that halted the production, principal photography officially wrapped in late September 2022.

The movie has been missing from the ‘Coming in 2023’ marketing of Netflix, so The Old Guard is likely to not be released this year. However, since the film has been in post-production for over a year at this point, we can assume it will be released sometime in 2024.

The Old Guard 2 is expected to be released sometime in 2024.
