Martin Scorsese’s latest film Killers of the Flower Moon has been in talks for over a month now. The film was released on October 20, 2023. The film deals with themes of greed, exploitation, and violence, posing questions about American history. Wildlife officer Cory Lambert finds the body of a young woman on an American-Indian reservation in a snowy Wyoming. After the autopsy reveals that she was raped, FBI agent Jane Banner decides to investigate the case with Lambert. They soon find out that their lives are also in danger. Sheridan has said that he wrote the film to raise awareness about the high number of rapes and murders of women, both on and off reservations.

Silence

Andrew Dominik’s 2007 film The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford is based on Ron Hansen’s 1983 novel of the same name. The film follows the relationship between Jesse James and Robert Ford, focusing on the events that led to the titular assassination. It stars Brad Pitt as James and Casey Affleck as Ford, with Sam Shephard, Paul Schneider, Mary-Louise Parker, Jeremy Renner, and more.

No Country for Old Men

Bong Joon-ho’s South Korean crime thriller Memories of Murder is based on Kim Kwang-rim’s 1996 play Come to See Me. The film follows detectives Park Doo-man (Song Kang-ho) and Seo Tae-yoon (Kim Sang-Kyung) leading an investigation into a string of murders and rapes in Apted’sin late 1980s Hwaseong. Kim’s play is loosely based on South Korea’s first confirmed serial murders.

Thunderheart

Michael Apted’s 1992 American Neo-Westerm mystery film Thunderheart is loosely based on the fictional portrayal of events relating to the 1973 Wounded Knee incident. In the event, the American Indian Movement seized the South Dakota town of Wounded Knee in protest against federal government policy regarding Native Americans. The film stars Val Kilmer, Sam Shepard, Graham Greene, Sheila Tousey, and Fred Ward.

Hostiles

Scott Cooper’s 2017 American Western drama is based on a story by Donald E. Stewart. The film stars Christian Bale, Wes Studi, Rosamund Pike, Ben Foster, Stephen Lang, Timothee Chalamet, and more. It follows a U.S. Army cavalry officer in 1892. He must escort a Cheyenne war chief and his family back to Montana.

Dances with Wolves

Kevin Costner’s feature directorial debut Dances with Wolves is an adaptation of Michael Blake’s 1988 novel of the same name. It follows Union Army Lieutenant John J. Paul Anderson’s 2007 American period drama film There Will Be Blood is based on Upton Sinclair’s 1927 novel Oil! The film follows silver miner turned oilman Daniel Plainview (Daniel Day-Lewis) on a ruthless quest for wealth during Southern California’s late 19th and early 20th-century oil boom. It stars  Paul Dano, Kevin J. O’Connor, Ciarán Hinds, and Dillon Freasier.
