Dreamworks Animation offered us two projects this year, Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken and Trolls Band Together. The renowned animation studio is set to revisit the most beloved franchises with a fourth Kung Fu Panda film and a fifth Shrek film in active development. Now the studio is set to collaborate with its long-time partner Netflix with Orion and the Dark. Not only will this be their first feature film collaboration, but it will also be written by none other than Charlie Kaufman. Here’s everything we know about Orion and the Dark.

Orion And The Dark Trailer And Cast

Orion and the Dark is based on Emma Yarlett’s children’s picture book of the same name. Yarlett’s second children’s book is a critically acclaimed bestseller, so it makes sense why Netflix and DreamWorks would be interested in bringing this timeless story to life.

The first official trailer for Orion and the Dark was released on November 9, 2024, as a part of Netflix’s “Geeked Week ’23” event. Orion and the Dark trailer introduces us to the titular duo as well as hinting at Dark’s nemesis: Light. The studio shared three cast names: Jacob Tremblay as Orion and Paul Walter Hauser as The Dark.

Synopsis and Release Date

The official plot synopsis for Orion and the Dark reads: “Orion seems a lot like your average elementary school kid –– shy, unassuming, harboring a secret crush. But underneath his seemingly normal exterior, Orion is a ball of adolescent anxiety, completely consumed by irrational fears of bees, dogs, the ocean, cell phone waves, murderous gutter clowns, and falling off a cliff. But of all his fears, the thing he’s the most afraid of is what he confronts on a nightly basis: the dark. So when the literal embodiment of his worst fear pays a visit, Dark whisks Orion away on a roller coaster ride around the world to prove there is nothing to be afraid of in the night. As the unlikely pair grow closer, Orion must decide if he can learn to accept the unknown –– to stop letting fear control his life and finally embrace the joy of living.”

Orion and the Dark will be available to stream on Netflix on February 2, 2024
