I just feel very sad talking about this film. It is a James Wan directorial and yet we all know that there is no hype around it. Wan is one of the most talented filmmakers working in Hollywood right now. In fact, his horror game is unmatched by any contemporary of his. When he first directed a superhero film, it grossed over a billion dollars – Aquaman. However, I don’t know what happened with its sequel. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom never stood a chance in my opinion. There was so much negativity surrounding the film that it being a box office success was next to impossible. Since its release on December 22nd, Aquaman 2 has earned $375.1 million worldwide. To put things into perspective, the James Wan directorial costed around $215 million to make, meaning the film would need to earn at least $430 million to break even. Well, that’s clearly not going to happen. As the film is slowly moving towards being a box failure, Warner Bros. is quick to make it available online.
Aquaman 2 Online Release Date Preponed!
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will be DCEU’s fourth box office failure on a trot. This trend started in 2022 with Black Adam and was continued by Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, Blue Beetle and now Aquaman 2. Although, I must add, Aquaman 2 has performed reasonably well than the other DC flicks I just mentioned, it just couldn’t keep up with its massive budget. According to a new listing on dvdreleases, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is all set to be available for rent or purchase on digital and VOD platforms like Amazon Prime Video, Vudu and Apple iTunes from January 23rd, 2024.
The same website had previously revealed an online release date of February 6th, 2024. However, it seems like given the current circumstances, Warner Bros. has decided to prepone the digital release of the sequel. If this release date sticks, then Aquaman 2 will have an exclusive theatrical run of 32 days. This is more or less on par with other DC flops that have released this year.
Here’s a look at all of the theatrical-to-online release dates from DC in 2023. Shazam! Fury of the Gods notably was available in mere three weeks after opening in theaters:
- Shazam! Fury of the Gods: March 17th to April 7th (21 days)
- The Flash: June 16th to July 18th (32 days)
- Blue Beetle: August 18th to September 26th (39 days)
If Warner Bros. took 39 days for Aquaman 2’s online release, then the film would’ve released on January 30th, 2024. At first, the studio was planning to give the film a theatre to digital window of 46 days, however, that window has now been decided been reduced to 32 days, similar to The Flash.
The sequel just like the original film is helmed by James Wan and stars Jason Momoa in the titular role along with Yahya Abdul Mateen II as Black Manta, Patrick Wilson as Orm aka Ocean Master, Amber Heard as Mera and Nicole Kidman as Queen Atlanna.
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is playing in theatres near you.
