December last year was one of the craziest months for cinephiles. There were so many options in theatres that it was impossible to watch all of them. Yes, having too many options is also a problem. Despite competition from heavyweights like Wonka, Aquaman 2 and Anyone but You, a film that found its audience immediately was The Color Purple, a remake of the 1985 classic of the same name that was directed by Steven Spielberg. Made on a budget of $100 million, the film has earned $58.2 million since its release on Christmas eve. The Blitz Bazawule directorial opened at the box office with strong numbers but quickly dipped. It looks difficult for the film to earn its budget back, considering that Warner Bros. has decided to give it an early home media release.
When Will The Color Purple Start Streaming?
The Color Purple was originally scheduled to release on digital and VOD platforms on January 26th, 2024. However, due to the sudden dip in its box office performance, Warner Bros. took the call to make the film available for rent or purchase online ten days sooner i.e., January 16th, 2024. This means that the film won’t even have a month of exclusive time at theatres. Along with the online release date, the film’s physical media release date has also been announced.
Dvdreleases has listed The Color Purple to release on physical media formats like DVD and Blu-ray on March 12th, 2024. Since, the film is a Warner Bros. production its streaming home will by default be MAX. So, when will the film start streaming on the platform? Well, films throughout the year have taken varying periods of time to start streaming on MAX. Some have taken less than fifty days while others more than a hundred. Here are the streaming windows (from theaters to MAX) for similar films in 2023:
- House Party: January 13 – March 3 (49 days)
- Magic Mike’s Last Dance: February 10 – June 2 (112 days)
- Evil Dead Rise: April 21 – June 23 (63 days)
- The Nun II: September 8 – October 27 (49 days)
Most of MAX’s releases happens on Fridays and given that the film isn’t performing well at the box office, Warner Bros. won’t keep it away from MAX for a long time. Considering that, there are three likely streaming release dates for the film. The quickest option is Tuesday, February 16th, followed by February 23rd or March 1st. I’d have bet on March 1st because it is the closest to the physical media release. Most of the time, the physical media release date and streaming release date of a film are nearby.
The Color Purple is originally book written by Alice Walker that published in 1982. The remake is directed by Blitz Bazawule and stars Fantasia Barrino, Hailey Bailey, Danielle Brooks, Colman Domingo and Taraji P. Henson.
