Kung Fu Panda 5 and Furious Five Standalone Movie Are In Development

Kung Fu Panda is a well renowned animated franchise under Dreamworks. There have been four movies made in the span of 16 years with a cumulative collection of more than $2 billion. This figure will only increase as Kung Fu Panda 4 is still playing in theatres (until now $202 million).  There was a considerable gap between the third and fourth movie, which made many people speculate that the Kung Fu Panda movie series was done for good. However, Dreamworks proved them wrong and released Kung Fu Panda 4 in theatres. Certainly that was the last instalment of the franchise, right? WRONG. According to a new rumor, Kung Fu Panda 5 is in active development as well. Keep reading to know more.

Kung Fu Panda 5: We Haven’t Seen The Last Of The Franchise!

Yes, you read it correctly, Kung Fu Panda 5 is under development at Dreamworks. It will act as a direct sequel to the newly released Kung Fu Panda 4. The film will be an attempt from Dreamworks to rectify the mistakes made in Kung Fu Panda 4 and give the fans a deserving sequel. For now, director Jennifer Yuh Nelson (Kung Fu Panda 2 & Kung Fu Panda 3) is attached to the project.

The studio has seemingly cut all ties with Kung Fu Panda 4’s director Mike Mitchell given the disappointing outing he had. Obviously the film is early stages of development and the animation is slated to begin sometime in mid to late 2025. As of now, a 2028 release date seems like a viable option but take this information with a grain of salt.

New King Fu Panda FURIOUS FIVE Spin Off Film

This is not the only news from the Kung Fu Panda franchise. In the same report, it was mentioned that along with the sequel, a standalone Furious Five movie is also in development which will be released in 2027. The movie is reportedly set between the events of Kung Fu Panda 3 & 4. We’ve all been waiting to see more of our beloved Furious Five who (apart from Tigress) haven’t enjoyed a lot of screen time in the franchise.

This Furious Five spin-off will give viewers the chance to know what ”mission” the Five were on during the events of the Mike Mitchell’s Kung Fu Panda 4. The report further reveals that there are going to be massive recasts for all the Furious Five. Only Jackie Chan is expected to return as Master Monkey. Dreamworks is aiming to make a darker film than the tone of Kung Fu Panda 2.

This film will be much more serious in nature when compared to the previous four Kung Fu Panda films. The Furious Five movie is directed by Joel Crawford, who also directed Puss in Boots: The Last Wish and The Croods 2.

Kung Fu Panda 4 is now playing in theatres near you.
