Toy Story is an American animation media franchise that started in 1995 with the release of the first Toy Story film which was an instant critical and commercial hit. Ever since then, three sequels for the film have been released including Toy Story 2 (1999), Toy Story 3 (2010), Toy Story 4 (2019). All of them highly appreciated by the critics as well as the fans making Toy Story, the flagship franchise for Pixar. Well, we all grew up with these movies so there’s really no need for us to remind you how good they are. Anyways, Pixar is now back with the fifth film in the franchise titled Lightyear.
Lightyear follows the story of the fan favorite Toy Story character, Buzz Lightyear as he embarks on an intergalactic adventure with a group of ambitious recruits and his robot companion. It has been directed by Angus MacLane and features the MCU fame actor Chris Evans as the titular character. The movie is set to debut next week and jut held its world premiere yesterday. As expected, once the embargo lifted, reactions and reviews started pouring in from all sides, and the first reviews are generally positive with only a few criticisms. Have a look at the first reviews and early reactions of Lightyear (2022) down below.
Lightyear Is Unique and Grand
Get ready for a new era of Pixar! #Lightyear is one of the most unique and amazing things they've ever done. Hold your heart and watch ON THE BIGGEST SCREEN POSSIBLE! Too grand!

The Star Wars of Toy Story
LIGHTYEAR is STAR WARS by way of TOY STORY – if you're a fan of outer space adventure, clever comedy, brothers and sisters kissing, heady sci-fi concepts, and of course tear-jerking montages, you're gonna have a GREAT time. Looked stunning in IMAX

Chris Evans is Perfect As Buzz Lightyear
#Lightyear does everything a Buzz Lightyear film needs to do. The visuals are excellent, the core characters are likable, and Evans is a great choice. There are more than a few moments that will have fans cheering, and “Sox the cat” steals the show… Hilarious character. pic.twitter.com/vC0Lc6QxvE

Lightyear = visually stunning, epic space adventure, cinematic masterpiece. So gorgeous you'll forget it's animation. Sox is hilarious, Zurg is full of surprises, most importantly, Chris Evans perfectly embodies Buzz Lightyear! You'll never look at sandwiches the same. #Lightyear pic.twitter.com/vlE0OY7IxM

Lightyear is One of the Best Pixar Films
I will admit I am not the biggest #pixar fan. However, #lightyear was one of Pixar’s best yet. Great script. Great Banter. Amazing animation! This one will be the big hit for summer 2022!#lightyearmovir #toystory #BuzzLightyear pic.twitter.com/jpudHgBIHo

But Not Everyone Loved It
Surprised to discover that #Lightyear is Pixar’s safest movie of recent memory. Underdeveloped villain, lackluster supporting cast, I was left a little disappointed. Keke Palmer barely gets a chance to shine. This was Pixar’s chance to go bold, but instead they went by the book. pic.twitter.com/eqPB00UIHT

#Lightyear is my least favorite Pixar movie yet. That isn't to say it's bad — but it's merely alright. Moments of greatness here and there, and Sox is MVP for sure, but I couldn't help but feel like it was labored to even go through the motions. You'll watch it once and forget it pic.twitter.com/Iy2CKPGQQx

LIGHTYEAR is generally pleasing but too stuck in the past to justify its existence. Chris Evans brings new depth to Buzz & Sox is a hilarious sidekick character. The fast paced action, humor & lovable characters are all here but a middling story makes this an average Pixar effort pic.twitter.com/5sDZZRl97m

I have a million questions about the opening title cards in Lightyear, the inclusion of which turn the movie from something deeply average and forgettable to confoundingly unwell.

The reactions are largely positive and even the bad ones appreciate some or the other parts of the film. So, even though it doesn’t seem like the best Pixar or Toy Story film, it seems worth checking out. Also, almost all critics mentioned how visually stunning it is, so if are you planning to watch it, upgrade your seats to an IMAX theatre and watch it on the biggest screen possible!
