A live-action Hercules film set as a remake of Disney’s 1997 animation film of the same is currently in development with Guy Ritchie attached to direct. Ritchie previously helmed the Aladdin remake back in 2019 for the studio, which was commercially successful and grossed around $1billion world-wide despite of mixed reviews.
Hercules Live-Action Remake Details
Dave Callaham who wrote Marvel’s Shang-Chi and The legend of the Ten Rings has already written a first draft of the script. Disney is currently searching for other writers to work on the project and Joe & Anthony Russo are set to produce the film through their AGBO banner.
The 1997 original animated Hercules film is a musical fantasy-adventure directed by Ron Clements and Jon Musker. The story follows the legendary Greek hero to save Mount Olympus from God of the Underworld, Hades. Hercules is voiced by Tate Donovan and Hades is voiced by James Woods in the original film. It is unclear whether the live-action remake follows the original’s musical elements.
More Live-Action Remakes from Disney
Disney has been remaking live-action remakes of their classic animated films for a while and the studio has seen big success with some of the remakes like The Lion King(2019) and Aladdin(2019) despite of backlash from some of the original movies fans. The studio also lined up a Snow White remake directed by Marc Webb, starring Rachel Zegler in the titular role and Gal Gadot is cast as the evil queen. Disney’s another live-action remake The Little Mermaid, which stars Javier Bardem, Melissa McCarthy, and Halle Bailey cast as Ariel is currently scheduled to release next year on Memorial Day Weekend.
