The famous decades spanning toyline for Mattel- Barbie is getting a live action movie for herself. While early on Mattel had approached Sony to produce the film with Anne Hathaway or Amy Schumer to play the titular role. However, the project was dormant until Warner Bros. took over and brought The Little Women director Greta Gerwig to helm the film. Soon after this decision, the project started to move at a hot pace with Margot Robbie been cast as Barbie and Ryan Gosling playing Ken. It was not long before Warner Bros. released their first look for both Barbie and Ken. While the first looks gave us an idea of what both characters will look like, we’d not gotten an image where he see both of them in one frame or until now we didn’t.
Barbie and Ken in new Avatars?
The first look of Barbie showed Margot Robbie driving a convertible and a rich pink background behind her. Ken’s first look was similar as well as we saw him in the same pink background but in denim cut-off jacker that complements his physique. Apart from these official images we’d gotten a few snaps of Margot Robbie on set in a pink Bell Bottom. Say what you will but pink appears to be significant in the story. But now thanks to some more intrusive people in Leavesden, London; we’ve gotten both Barbie and Ken in one frame. I mean it was inevitable.
All the above shots does give us an idea of the sizzling chemistry that will be shared on screen between Margot and Ryan. The shots taken suggest that they’re indeed performing a scene but it is hard to point out what exactly might be going on here. Although, Margot has the same attire she’d when her set images went viral, in those images she is walking out from her trailer. So, it is possible these shots were taken just after that as we see her on the set in a scene with Ryan.
Ryan’s outfit is miles different from what we’d previously seen. He is in a all black western attire, with white shoes and a white cowboy hat. Although, we don’t see a horse in the images it is safe to assume there might be one around. Again, he wears a pink undershirt. Pink has some significance here. Margot too is seen wearing a similar cowboy hat as him. The story of the film is still pretty much under wraps as it is still in production. The film along with a talented Director also packs in an impressive cast like America Ferrera, Simu Liu, Kate McKinnon, Issa Rae, Michael Cera, and Will Ferrell. Reportedly, Rae, Hari Nef, Liu, and Ncuti Gatwa are playing different version of Barbie and Ken, respectively.
Even though the film is still in production it has managed to create quite a buzz around it with the sizzling first looks and these set images. While the first looks gave us the vibe of 60’s American beach girl, the new images are quite different from it and they carry a 70’s rodeo superstar vibe. Having said that I think it is safe to say the movie won’t take place in the modern time. The film had promised to subvert the viewer’s expectations and I think it has been doing that pretty well until now. Let me know your thoughts on these new images.
