Matt Reeves’ The Batman Bye Bye Superhero, Welcome Detective Batman

Battinson is all set to arrive with his first Batman film and DC is now maximizing its marketing efforts. The Batman is first DC film to come out in 2022 but is not a part of the DCEU yet. This standalone Batman film is directed by Matt Reeves (Planet of the Apes and Cloverfield series) and stars Robert Pattinson as DC’s iconic character. But this time it might not be the Batman you’d expect or grew up with.

What Matt Reeves Has to Say

When he was first involved with The Batman project, it was during the Batfleck’s solo Batman film stage. That film was supposed to pick off where Justice League ended and show Batman’s struggle against the new villain Deathstroke. At that time there were no plans for the Battinson’s movie. Reeves wasn’t willing to direct this half-baked script and couldn’t connect with it.

Being a Batman fan from his childhood, he wanted to connect with the character and rebuild it from scratch. So, he almost didn’t accept the project, before Warner Bros decided to give him his freedom to direct the film from scratch. Not only that, but The Batman was also decided to not be included in the DCEU scheme of things for now. So, it’s a standalone DC film where Reeves has full control of the character as well as his universe and setting.

“I said look, I think maybe I’m not the person for this. And I explained to them why I love this character. I told them that there have been so many great movies, but if I were to do this, I’d have to make it personal, so that I understood what I was going to do with it, so that I know where to put the camera, so that I know what to tell the actors, so that I know what the story should be,” said Reeves in an interview with Esquire Middle East.

Detective Batman not Superhero Batman

Reeves vision for The Batman is not something superhero movie fans would expect. He has tried to make it as realistic as possible, by stripping him away from cool gadgets and his unrealistic feats. That aside the film will have a noir theme relying as much on realism and practicality as possible.

This is how Batman was introduced by Detective Comics in 1939. He was the world’s greatest detective with a few added gimmicks and good combat skills. We have seen two different eras of Batman in the past two decades. Nolan and Christian Bale’s Batman had a crime thriller vibe but relied too much on technology. DCEU and Affleck’s Batman was in a different league where he fought alongside Gods and performed some OP feats.

Patty’s Batman will be more of a detective making the film a crime thriller but without TDKT’s high end technology. It would no doubt be cool to see Reeves vision of The Batman. But if you expect God’s flying around or futuristic tech coming out of Batman’s belt, this one ain’t for you.
