It took 36 years for Paramount to make a Top Gun sequel. It makes sense as the original film was neither a critically acclaimed nor was a huge Box Office sensation. Yet over the course of 36 years, fans around the world of different generations were drawn towards the film. Despite it being a main stream Hollywood film, the film has garnered a cult fan following. Following the tragic suicide of director Tony Scott, the chances of a sequel looked dimmed. However, Paramount pulled through this and assembled the old band back with a captain to the ship- Joseph Kosinski. After multiple delays and reshoots, the sequel titled Top Gun: Maverick finally released on 27th Many 2022. And boy was it worth it.
Kosinski’s might just’ve delivered the best film of his career and the critics concur with me. Every critic that saw the film was blown away with what the sequel had accomplished. Off the bat Maverick beat the original in ratings and critical acclaim. For me Top Gun: Maverick is the best film of the year, yet. Just after after Top Gun: Maverick’s early reviews we were quick tell you that the sequel might blow past the original in Box Office numbers and it looks like we’re right.
Top Gun: Maverick Cruises Past the $1 Billion Mark!
Having beat the original film in ratings now what most people were looking out that could it top the Box Office collection of the original. I’m not talking about the $357.1 million collection of the original. While it was quite substantial for its time, we would have to factor in the inflation over the 36 years, the number is close to something like $924.4 million in 2022. That’s a big number! The early predictions for Top Gun: Maverick suggested that the sequel would earn around $715 million at the box office, with a opening of $90-$130 million.
That was great seeing the film was made on a budget of $152 million. Just a few weeks by, we wrote an article pegging the thought will Top Gun: Maverick cross the $1 Billion threshold, a milestone no film of 2022 has crossed. Not even Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which was the film many predicted to cross the $1 Billion mark. It is what it is. It seems Top Gun: Maverick has decided to flip every concern or prediction. As I’d suspected, seeing the lack of competition until Thor: Love & Thunder hits theatres, the sequel should easily cross $1 Billion mark.
Although, the film achieved this feat even earlier than anyone had predicted. It was predicted to hit $1 Billion mark sometime in July but today on 27th June 2022, exactly 2 months since its release, Top Gun: Maverick has crossed the $1 Billion threshold making it the first film in 2022 and the first Tom Cruise film to achieve this feat. The film as of today sits at $1,006,423,000 on the worldwide Box Office. The domestic collection is $484.7 million and international collection is $521.7 million.
This means the film surpassed the original even in the Box Office numbers, the inflated ones. In my opinion, the film absolutely deserves this and it is so refreshing to see a non-Superhero film enjoying this kind of Box Office success. It will be fun to see how much can the film extract as it is on the last straw of its Box Office run. Also, which film will be the next to join the $Billion club and who will surpass Top Gun: Maverick this year. Thor: Love & Thunder and Avatar: Way of the Water being my favorites.
Top Gun: Maverick is currently playing in theatres and will stream on Paramount+ from Mid-July.
