Warner Bros. have made it a habit of owning every major franchise there exists. Well, Legendary Pictures, an extension of Warner Bros. that we most likely see during the opening of a DC film or a Nolan film or at least we used to see in a Nolan film. Not anymore as Nolan has now partnered up with Universal for his next film Oppenheimer. Regardless, Legendary Pictures produces the MonsterVerse that has movies with monsters in the fore front. Monsters like Godzilla, King Kong, Ghidorah, Mothra, etc. While Godzilla and King Kong are an important part of Japanese lore. As important as they made movies on them in the 20th Century. The original King Kong movie was made in 1933 while the original Godzilla movie was made in 1954. There were movies made after that as well and not even just one monster, there crossovers as well.
The film was titled Godzilla vs Kong and it was made in 1962. The film was not made by any big studio and at the end of it Kong won the fight. It was 1996 when Warner Bros. took over the rights and the first film of this new venture was made in 2005 and again it was a King Kong movie. Since then a whole universe, 2014’s Godzilla, 2017’s Kong: The Skull Island, 2019’s Godzilla: King of Monsters and then finally the big face off in 2021’s Godzilla vs Kong. Now, we have an update that suggest about an upcoming sequel to Godzilla vs Kong. Also, a new Monsterverse web series Godzilla and the Titans was also announced a few weeks back, which you can read about here.
Godzilla vs Kong Sequel Releases in 2024?
As previously announced, Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard will be returning for the sequel, with Dan Stevens (The Guest, Legion) playing the lead role. Production on Godzilla vs. Kong 2 was supposedly going to begin this summer over in Australia, so an early 2024 release date seems right on track with the expected production timeline. Adam Wingard previously talked about the sequel in an interview this year.
“I think Godzilla vs. Kong is the first time that we’ve really truly been able to have full sequences where the film leaves the humans and stays with the monsters, just like any other character. That’s a big breakthrough VFX-wise and even story-wise. If there’s another MonsterVerse movie, in my opinion, it should be the first full-on monster film. I would say, 30 percent humans, the rest monsters, basically flipping the formula of what a lot of these movies generally are. I think people are ready for it.”
Seeing that Dan Stevens is the only confirmed star in the sequel right now it seems like Wingard is moving forward with his vision. The previous film introduced us to Hollow Earth and it is only natural that the sequel would further delve into it. We have no idea whether Millie Bobby Brown’s character would return for the sequel, as she has been a significant part of the Godzilla franchise. However, we don’t have an update on that. All we can say that Dan Stevens is carrying the sequel on his shoulders.
Godzilla vs Kong sequel is slated to release on 15th March 2024, three years later its predecessor.
Godzilla vs Kong is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
