After multiple delays and a great deal of suspense, God of War Ragnarok finally has a release date. The sequel to the 2018 masterwork God of War, Sony and Santa Monica Studio’s God of War Ragnarök, will debut on the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 on November 9, 2022, according to a blog post from Sony. So now that it is barely 4 months away, it is time to start speculating and theorizing. Today, we’ll talk about the prophecy of Ragnarok which would be the main focus of the game and what role our heroes will play in it.
Loki and Kratos Might Help in Causing Ragnarok
First of, to those who say Atreus aka Loki will be the main antagonist of God of War: Ragnarok, that will not happen. Even if Atreus ends up doing the worst thing possible, Kratos will most definitely aid him rather than fighting him. The game spent a lot of time in mending their father son relationship so, it is highly unlikely that Kratos and Atreus will end up fighting each other. However, this doesn’t mean that they can’t help in causing Ragnarok, as ultimately Loki does cause Ragnarok and same might happen here. As you may remember, Kratos ended up totally destroying the Greek Pantheon before he moved on to God of War 2018’s Norse Pantheon.
So, it is very much possible that this game ends with the destruction of Midgard. It was already revealed at the end of previous game that Atreus aka Loki’s destiny is to bring justice to the Giants and end the tyranny caused by Odin, Thor, and the other Norse Gods. Now whether he does that willingly or unwillingly is unclear at this point. In the trailer, they sure made clear that Kratos and Atreus are on a quest to “stop Ragnarok” but it doesn’t look like it.
Fenrir, Serpent and Surtr Will Be Allies in God of War: Ragnarok
The biggest clue that they will assist in causing Ragnarok is the Loki prophecy mentioned above. Some other clues are that Serpent is their ally and Norse Gods so far are their enemies. They have already killed Magni, Modi, and Baldr, so Thor and Odin are surely not gonna sit and drink ale with them. They have made enemies of all the Norse Gods and managed to piss off even the kind-hearted Freya. So, as of now their allegiance lies with the Serpent and Angrboda, as confirmed by the God of War: Ragnarok trailer.
Angrboda is the mother of monsters and the mate of Loki is the Norse mythology. So, apart from being the potential love interest of Atreus, she is the mother of Fenrir, the Midgard Serpent and Hel (The ruler of dead). All these three creatures have roles to play in Ragnarok, along with the fire giant, Surtr the Brave. Its said when Ragnarok occurs Serpent would devour Thor as well as Midgard, Fenrir would swallow the Sun, Odin will ride one last time only to be killed by Fenrir, and finally Surtr would turn Asgard and Midgard to ashes and die along with it. Lastly, Hel would be responsible for assuring the souls’ safe travel to Helheim. Also, in Norse Mythology, Loki fights alongside the Giants during Ragnarok and later dies as he and Heimdllr kill each other.
So, yes Loki pretty much causes Ragnarok and takes an active part in it but it is possible that God of War: Ragnarok takes a different direction. Instead of all this, maybe they join hands with remaining Norse Gods and fight Angrboda and the monsters to stop Ragnarok. That would surely be an amazing twist and it is very much possible, why? Because they don’t seem to follow Norse Mythology in the trailer as if they did, Tyr and Loki would surely not be allies. Anyways, its just a matter of 120 days now till we find out!
