The star-studded cast of The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes now has a new addition. Game of Thrones actor Peter Dinklage will be starring in the prequel. Deadline reports that Dinklage will portray Casca Highbottom, the man who created the Hunger Games and served as dean of the Academy, a prestigious secondary school in the Capitol. The actor best known for playing Tyrion Lannister on the HBO television series Game of Thrones joins an ensemble cast that also stars Tom Blyth and Rachel Zegler.
Dinklage Will Play The Dean Of The Academy in The Hunger Games Prequel
The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes director Francis Lawrence, who previously helmed three Hunger Games adaptations, reacted to the casting and expressed enthusiasm that Dinklage will be a part of the franchise. “Dean Highbottom is one of the most powerful people in Snow’s life. As the austere and vindictive face of the games, he sets the rules that will determine every aspect of Coriolanus’s fate,” Lawrence said. “I’m thrilled that Peter will be bringing him to life.”
Nathan Kahane, President of Lionsgate’s Motion Picture Group, adds, “With production underway, we couldn’t be more excited about the way this cast has come together and thrilled to be welcoming Peter Dinklage to Panem. Peter is not just a fan favourite actor who brings a commanding presence to every part he plays. He is one of the best actors alive. He will bring a formidable, charismatic authority to the important role of the dean of the Academy.”
The events of The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes will take place decades before those of the first four movies and before Blyth’s Coriolanus Snow rose to power as the ruthless President of Panem. The movie will centre around 18-year-old Snow, who is regarded as the final hope for his fading lineage – a once-proud family that has fallen from grace in a post-war Capitol. In the prequel, Snow will be seen mentoring District 12 tribute Lucy Gray Baird (played by West Side Story actress Rachel Zegler) during the tenth annual Hunger Games.
In addition to Dinklage, Blyth, and Zegler, Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes also stars Hunter Schafer, Jason Schwartzman, Irene Boehm, Cooper Dillon, Luna Kuse, Kjell Brutscheidt, Dimitri Abold, Athena Strates, Dakota Shapiro, George Somner, and Vaughan Reilly among others.
The movie is slated to premiere in theatres on November 17, 2023.
