The MCU’s first 3 phases focused on the Infinity Saga. The saga lasted about 23 movies and the climax of the Saga was helmed by the Russo Brothers. These seemingly novices did a splendid job with directing Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Seeing the quality of their vision in that film, Marvel President Kevin Feigi entrusted them with the third Captain America film – Civil War. In that film, the Russo Brothers handled almost the all characters of the MCU, that to with ease. Handling every character’s separate tracks in a 2 hour confined film is not everyone’s piece of cake. I mean we saw what happened to Joss Whedon while directing Avengers: Age of Ultron. The outfall of Age of Ultron had put Marvel in search for a new director for their climactic end to the Infinity Saga.
Russo Brothers directing Civil War and managing each character very well acted as a saving grace for Marvel. Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, the two part finale for the Infinity Saga were helmed by the Russo Brothers and they were Marvel’s most successful films yet. Avengers: Infinity War grossed around $2.048 Billion worldwide while Endgame outdone everyone with its massive $2.7975 Billion box office haul. It beat Avatar to the race of the Highest Grossing Film of All Time. Although, Avatar regained its top spot back, it doesn’t take away any glory from Avengers: Endgame. However, after these two films the Russo Brothers took a well deserved break from the MCU and went onto direct Cherry, Extraction and The Gray Man. Their movies outside the MCU haven’t made a mark and since their exit from the MCU, the MCU also hasn’t been the same.
So in these trying times for the MCU, the fans are demanding the Russo Brothers to make a comeback to the MCU. Most prominently for directing a Secret Wars or X-Men film. Well, we’ve heard the fans plea, now lets hear what the Russo Brothers have to say.
Will Secret Wars be Directed by the Russo Brothers?
The rumored Secret Wars is based on the 2015 comic of the same name. The comic’s story focuses on a Multiversal war and events called as Incursions (This was referred to in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness) that threatens the destruction of entire universes. With Kang already making an appearance in the MCU and all set to appear again it is only inevitable that everything culminates with Secret Wars. Previously, Russo Brothers were also rumored to direct the X-Men reboot for the MCU.
The Russo Brothers previously did address the possibility of them directing X-Men and their fondness for Wolverine’s character. They did confirm that there are no current plans for them returning to the MCU just yet, however they did confirm that they’ll inevitably return to the MCU at some stage. Now that the X-Men rumors were addressed fans speculated that they’d return to the MCU for directing Secret Wars, that appears to be where this current saga is headed towards.
In a recent promotional interview, the Russo Brothers were asked about this and they addressed this rumor. Check out their response.
Joe & Anthony Russo are NOT directing SECRET WARS. At least not yet. No announcement this week at Comic-Con. Sorry guys. But maybe one day!
Lots more from @Russo_Brothers coming soon on #TheGrayMan & more. pic.twitter.com/Px5RRX7zi7

Don’t be disappointed just yet as even if they’ve denied it now, the film is quite away as Marvel is merely in its phase 4 and phase 5 has some time to start. We might hear soon about the Russos return to the MCU. Seeing the current state the MCU and the Russo Brothers are in, it seems like a perfect time for a reunion. However for now don’t place any bets about the Russo Brothers directing any Marvel films.
