House of the Dragon Renewed For Season 2!

HBO is milking out its biggest asset by adding another to its universe- Game of Thrones. The new series is a prequel to the events of Game of Thrones and it will tell the epic and glorious story of House Targaryen or as you’d rather know them as House of the Dragon. The show is set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones. HBO is planning to re-taste the success of Game of Thrones, I mean when you have the biggest show in TV history it is quite a bummer when it ends and that too on a sour note. Even if Game of Thrones has ended, HBO plans on making money by giving fans more stories from the same universe. At the time of writing, there are seven GOT spin-offs/prequels in development. One of them being House of the Dragon. The show will focus on Daenerys’ House. The series will feature the might of the Targaryens and their reign on the Seven Kingdoms until things went south.

The first season of the show is debuting on HBO and HBO Max next month and is said to have 10 episodes. The showrunners Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik intend to make at least 5 seasons. If the show plans on doing that then it has to continue to perform well HBO throughout its many seasons. However, before we fantasize about the future. House of the Dragon Season 1 has to set the high standards for HBO this year. Well, if the pilot is any indication, I think the the prequel is already doing it and it seems like HBO feels the same as well. HBO has just renewed House of the Dragon for a 2nd Season.

Why is House of the Dragon renewed for a Second Season so Quickly?

House of the Dragon’s pilot premiered on HBO Max with over 10 Million viewers watching it. Until now the pilot has been watched by over 20 Million viewers across linear, On Demand and HBO Max platforms in the U.S., based on a combination of Nielsen data and first-party data. I’d predicted this last time when I talked about the grand opening record created by House of the Dragon. Earlier this year, there were rumors that House of the Dragon is already renewed for Season 2

However, HBO Chief Zaslav had denied any presumptions like these. He had certainly teased us about the possibility that the show might be renewed for a 2nd season. I was right about House of the Dragon Season 2. HBO was simply checking out the response for the prequel to be greenlit it. After seeing the huge numbers it has drawn in, HBO has just announced a season 2. This news comes to us only after 5 days since the Pilot’s premiere. This is simply one of the first Game of Thrones prequels and it has already revived the craze among fans.

“We are beyond proud of what the entire House of the Dragon team has accomplished with season one,” said Francesca Orsi, Executive Vice President, HBO Programming in a statement. “Our phenomenal cast and crew undertook a massive challenge and exceeded all expectations, delivering a show that has already established itself as must-see-TV. A huge thank you to George, Ryan, and Miguel for leading us on this journey. We couldn’t be more excited to continue bringing to life the epic saga of House Targaryen with season two.”

This news will elate a lot of fans today. However, moving forward, House of the Dragon has a bigger challenge of keeping and holding the audience it has gotten. All it takes is one bad episode to lose your audience forever. If Game of Thrones has taught us anything it is that. Hopefully, House of the Dragon doesn’t drop in quality and soars higher than ever. If the show continues to perform so consistently the show might run as long as Game of Thrones or longer even if the creators originally planned only 5 seasons.

The prequel stars Paddy Considine, Emma D’Arcy, Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Milly Alcock, Graham McTavish, and Rhys Ifans.

House of the Dragon’s Pilot is currently streaming on HBO Max or Disney+. New episodes will debut on every Sunday or Monday on HBO and HBO Max or Disney+ Hotstar depending on the region you live in, at 9 pm or 6.30 am.
