The third and hopefully final installment in the Jurassic World franchise or the sixth in the Jurassic Park franchise released this year. Jurassic World: Dominion was supposed to be an epic conclusion to the franchise that begun in 1993. Seeing how The Fallen Kingdom left things I think it was safe to assume that everyone was eager for concluding chapter in the trilogy. It was truly something unseen, dinosaurs and humans co-existing that’s pretty fresh. However, Dominion didn’t deliver on that promise as the screen time of dinosaurs was pretty minimum coupled with a lackluster screenplay. Not enough people got eaten to save this film. The original trio returning is a sight for sore eyes but they too are wasted.
Also, the problem with the film was the film was promoting human-dinosaur co-existence in a franchise who’s USP is dinosaurs eating humans. Even more worrisome were they new elements they brought in, the locusts were the new villains. A film in which dinosaurs aren’t villains isn’t fun. Yet you can’t have a Jurassic World film and not have dinosaurs eating people but if you have that then how do you promote co-existence? You see the problem there? Despite Dominion being thrashed by critics its Box Office performance has been phenomenal considering everything. The only thing the Jurassic Park franchise can thank Dominion about is because of the new film the entire franchise was able to cross the $6 Billion threshold at the global Box Office.
Jurassic World: Dominion is Financial Success!
Jurassic World: Dominion was made on a budget of $185 Million and earned $374,817,385 on the Domestic Box Office while $990,492,385 on the Worldwide Box Office. This puts its right behind Top Gun: Maverick- the biggest box success of 2022 ($1.42 Billion). It is surprising despite that despite failing critically, the film keeps on minting money. As far as I know, no in the world is loving this film so the amount of money it has collected is praiseworthy. It is difficult but the film can cross the $1 Billion mark.
Which will make it the only film this year after Maverick to achieve this feat. While being a financial success itself it has also helped the whole Jurassic Franchise to cross $6 Billion, proving once again that it is one of the biggest franchises. However, let’s not sing praises of Dominion as the previous films in the franchise have been even more successful and better in quality. So, on account of this feat, let’s take a look at how all the Jurassic Park films have performed. Let’s begin where it all started.
Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park remains the best film of this franchise and its Box Office numbers are proof of it. The first film was made at a budget of $63 Million in 1993. The film was a box office juggernaut and earned $404,214,720 at the domestic box office and a whopping $695,484,283 internationally. Making its worldwide cume a whopping $1,099,699,003 which is $2,125,223,707 today. After the astronomical success of the film, the studio wanted a sequel and Spielberg seemed to be on board with this idea.
However, he didn’t want to make another cash grab film which is just a cheap and same follow-up of the first film. So, he made the sequel as a completely new film and the critics and audiences didn’t seem to enjoy it like the original. It is by no way a bad film but is not par with the quality of the first. Jurassic Park: The Lost World was made on a budget of $73 Million and earned $229,086,679 on the domestic box office while $618,638,999 worldwide which is $1,069,381,241 today. Even if it is not as massive as the first one this still was a financial success in 1997.
So, the studio wanted another one and this might be the downfall of the franchise. This was the first film not directed by Steven Spielberg and naturally the quality dropped. This was the first bad film in the franchise and the box office numbers reflects so. Jurassic Park III was made on a budget of 93 Million and earned $181,171,875 domestically while $368,780,809 worldwide which is $580,621,766 today. After this the franchise had a huge break when it was resurrected in 2015. Jurassic World was a reboot cum sequel for the franchise and it did wonders for it.
The film was made on a huge budget of $150 Million and it earned $653,406,625 domestically while $1,671,537,444 worldwide which is $1,913,317,443 today. On paper this is biggest film of the franchise however, in the inflation adjusted figures it lands second to the original. The film was a very good addition to the franchise that brought everyone’s hopes high for the upcoming sequel. The sequel of the film Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom came out in 2018 and was an underwhelming addition to the franchise.
The film was made on a budget of $187 Million and it earned $417,719,760 domestically while $1,310,466,296 worldwide which is $1,448,720,752 today. This film was as bad as the third film in the original trilogy and as we know now the worst was saved for last. Dominion is hands down the worst movie in the Jurassic Franchise. So in conclusion the franchise has 3 good films and 3 bad films. Needless to say, $6 Billion is a big feat for any franchise.
