Attack on Titan Season 4 Part 3 Premiere Review - Devastating In Every Sense

It is hard to believe that it has been over 9 years since Attack on Titan or Shingeki no Kyojin first came out and took the world of anime by storm. Well AOT is back one last time which is actually not the last time as it will take a short break now before the finale of Season 4 Part 3. Basically, Season 4 Part 3 only has 2 episodes, one of which is out now and the next one aka the finale will arrive this fall. So instead of making many episodes, makers decided to make just two long specials to end the saga. Anyways, a lot happened in this particular episode or special and most of it was the stuff of nightmares. Before we begin analyzing it, beware that a ton of MAJOR SPOILERS follow below, so read at your own risk!

Attack on Titan Season 4 Part 3 – Bye Bye Hange San and Marley

Attack on Titan is often called Game of Thrones of anime but unlike GOT, AOT’s final season has been completely mind-numbing and exceptional. As mentioned above, the 1 hour special that aired on 3rd March is the penultimate episode of the saga with just one more episode to go. The one hour special consisted to two chapters – Chapter 1 “The Rumbling” and Chapter 2 “Sinners”. The Rumbling was an absolutely devastating and horrifying chapter as it began with mass genocide and ended with, the beloved character, Hange Zoe’s death.

Right from the opening, the chapter was incredibly violent and featured not just people, but also little children, getting crushed and evaporated by the Wall Titans and Eren. The sheer horrors of the situation are showcased first hand in the anime which makes it all 100x more terrifying than the manga. We see people screaming for their lives, committing suicide, and stampeding while the visuals present the genocide with utmost graphic details. Now add to that, the super-menacing score during the genocide and you have yourselves an atmosphere even more tense than you ever thought it would be. The chapter also gives you a deeper insight into what goes on in Eren’s mind and how he is not devoid of any emotion. His past interaction with Mikasa, interaction with the kid who later got crushed, and finally his younger self yelling “This is Freedom” perfectly showcased his journey towards the dark side.

That’s not it as later in the very same chapter we see deaths of two important characters aka Floch and Hange. While the moment where Floch shot at the alliance served no particular purpose, it did ultimately lead to the Hange’s death. Her sacrifice, undoubtedly, was one of the most heartbreaking moments of Attack on Titan but what made it even more gut-wrenching was her final interaction with Levi and Armin. Levi finally said the words, “Give Your Heart” and lost another close friend to this messed up and cruel world. Armin on the other hand was made the next commander of the Scouts by Hange as she put her and humanities faith in him. To make her death even more impactful, we see her getting reunited with Erwin and her comrades.

Moving on to Chapter 2 “Sinners”, it focused on strategizing and building up the hype to what will surely turn out to be an epic finale. The sequence where the alliance is shown strategizing and then being teleported to the astral plane consisted of some beautiful shots! Not to mention, this is also the scene where Mikasa finally got to yell “Eren” a few more times before the end XD. Jokes aside, that scene served a very important purpose which was to let the alliance and viewers know that Eren has nothing left to discuss and the only way to stop him is by killing him. In fact, we get to understand that Eren actually wants to die as obviously, no one can bear the toll of such a heinous genocide. But it was the end of the chapter and the episode which got us on the edge of our seats.

As the rumbling proceeds towards the final few survivors at Fort Salta, we see some action packed moments. We see humanities’ last stand aka the airships getting completely wrecked by the Beast Titan (under Eren’s control) and just as Marleyans begin to  lose all hope, the alliance arrives. Granted it was kind of a dramatic moment but it was AWESOME and you know it! It was simply epic watching an injured and nerfed Levi getting back into action, Reiner transforming into the Armored Titan mid-air to leap on Beast Titan, and Armin delivering a really cool line. The only bad part of the episode was that it ended here leaving all of us on a massive cliffhanger for the following months.

Now let us talk about some other elements which made both these chapters even better. First of all, the quality of animation and visuals was bonkers and the choice of music and score enhanced the viewing experience further. Secondly, the episode was full of sweet character moments including the Armin-Annie romance; the Hange moments mentioned above; Jean and Connie empathizing with Reiner; Reiner apologizing to Annie, and humanity realizing the sins they committed against the Eldians. These were many more such thought provoking moments throughout the episode which made the premiere even better than it had any right to be.

Final Verdict – Attack on Titan Season 4 Part 3 Premiere was not just what we expected and wanted it to be, but so much more. It delivered some terrific visuals and many devastating moments, but at the same time kept us on the edge of our seats and hyped up for the upcoming finale. It was undoubtedly one of the (if not the) best episodes of Attack on Titan as well as anime world as a whole!
