The Boy and the Heron is a new fantasy/adventure Japanese animated film that focuses on Mahito, a young 12-year-old boy, who struggles to settle in a new town after his mother’s death. However, when a talking heron informs Mahito that his mother is still alive, he enters an abandoned tower in search of her, which takes him to another world. Since, its release in Japan last year, the Hayao Miyazaki directorial has been a box office phenomenon as the film has grossed more than $165.8 million worldwide. Despite being such a success around the globe, the film has not made its way to India. So, is it coming ever releasing in India? Let’s find out.
The Boy and the Heron Is Coming To India!
Studio Ghibli’s The Boy and the Heron has not released in India despite being such a success worldwide. India boasts one of the largest anime watching audience so it is a surprise that such a famous film hasn’t made it to India. Well, that might change soon thanks to an Instagram comment by Singapore-based film distributor company Encore Films.
Weeb Central spotted an interaction between the distributor and a fan that hints us at the film’s India arrival. The company’s official Instagram page responded to a fan’s query about releasing The Boy and the Heron in India. They replied, “Yes, we are bringing The Boy and The Heron to India. Stay tuned!” Check out the Instagram post below:
Encore Films is an expert when it comes to distributing Japanese and other Asian films across Southeast Asian countries. Apart from releasing The Boy and the Heron in these regions, the company is also responsible for bringing the audience the new Spy x Family movie – Spy x Family Code: White.
Obviously an Instagram comment isn’t an official confirmation but it is certainly a ray of hope that avid fans can cling on to. They have been eagerly awaiting the release of The Boy and the Heron, considering its massive success. Additionally, IGN India has also reached out to Encore Films for additional confirmation regarding the release of The Boy and the Heron, however, so far there is no update.
In the recent past, anime films have been getting many theatrical releases in India. This number has increased over the past couple of years. However, I don’t think domestic companies have figured out the Indian market as they don’t understand the demand of anime fans in the country and their preferences regarding what they want to see.
Hayao Miyazaki is a legendary name in Japanese anime. In 2003, his film Spirited Away won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film. Naturally, his last film will generate significant hype. Even though the Japanese title references the 1937 novel of the same name, the film has an original story that is not connected to the novel.
The Boy and the Heron like all Miyazaki films has had amazing critical reception. The adventure drama has a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 97% from 245 reviews (audience score: 88%) and an IMDb score of 7.6/10.
The Boy and the Heron released in U.S. theatres on December 8th.
