Netflix's The Fall of the House of Usher

Mike Flanagan’s latest series The Fall of the House of Usher is now out on Netflix. The series is inspired by Edgar Allan Poe’s works and is named after one of Poe’s famous works. It is one of the many Poe references in the series. Almost every detail of the eight-episode series has reference to Poe’s writings.

The Episodes and Titles

Aside from The Fall of the House of Usher, Flanagan adapts seven more of Poe’s tales with individual episodes. Without providing details of various plots, the series focuses on the characters and the loose adaptation of other Poe stories. The Masque of the Red DeathMurders in the Rue MorgueThe Black CatThe Tell-Tale HeartGold-BugThe Pit and the Pendulum, and The Raven are all turned to fit the Usher characters throughout the series.

Various Supporting Characters

Nearly every character in The Fall of the House of Usher is named after characters created by Edgar Allan Poe. This includes every member of the Usher family. Roderick Usher’s first wife who is in almost every episode via flashbacks is named after Poe’s tragic final poem, Annabelle Lee. The granddaughter of Roderick is named after Lenore, the woman who is mourned throughout The Raven. Arthur Pym (Mark Hamill) is from Edgar Allan Poe’s only novel, The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket. The investigator and attorney trying to take down the Usher family for their pharmaceutical crimes is named after Auguste Dupin. Dupin appeared in three of Poe’s stories and is regarded to be the original mode for detectives in literature.

Verna And The Raven

Verna (Carla Gugino), is a shape-shifter who appears as someone contrasting with every one of the Usher family. Death and chaos follow her wherever she goes. Her name is not a coincidence, if you rearrange her name you can spell Raven.
