For years now, the biggest question surrounding Pirates of the Caribbean 6 has been whether Johnny Depp will return as Captain Jack Sparrow. While his portrayal of the eccentric pirate is legendary and synonymous with the franchise, the conversation shouldn’t only be about him. If there’s anything Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017) proved, it’s that the return of Will and Elizabeth Turner, along with the teased comeback of Davy Jones, is crucial for the franchise to reclaim its former glory.
The Importance of Will and Elizabeth Turner
The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise was at its absolute peak when Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) were just as much leads as Jack Sparrow. The first three films thrived on the trio’s dynamic—Jack’s cunning, Will’s heroism, and Elizabeth’s growth from aristocrat to pirate queen. Their love story, combined with their personal struggles, added depth to a series that could have otherwise just been a fun, swashbuckling adventure.
However, On Stranger Tides (2011) completely removed them from the equation, and the franchise suffered as a result. While Jack Sparrow is an entertaining character, he works best when bouncing off of others who provide contrast. Without Will and Elizabeth, the heart of the series was missing, and On Stranger Tides became a forgettable installment despite its box office success. Dead Men Tell No Tales recognized this, bringing Will and Elizabeth back in a limited capacity. The result? A much more nostalgic and emotionally engaging movie that set the stage for a sequel fans actually wanted.
The Davy Jones Tease: The Key to Pirates 6
The most exciting part of Dead Men Tell No Tales was its post-credit scene, teasing the return of none other than Davy Jones. There’s no doubt that Davy Jones (Bill Nighy) is the greatest villain the franchise has ever had. His chilling presence, his haunting design as the tentacled captain of the Flying Dutchman, and his tragic love story with the sea goddess Calypso make him one of the most memorable antagonists in film history. He wasn’t just a ruthless villain; he was a broken man driven by pain, betrayal, and power.
Of course, he met his end at the hands of Will Turner in At World’s End, but death has never been a finality in the Pirates universe. From Barbossa’s resurrection to Jack escaping Davy Jones’ Locker, the films have established that death is more of an inconvenience than a true end. And if anyone deserves to cheat death, it’s the captain of the Flying Dutchman himself.
It’s not even a stretch to imagine how Davy Jones could come back. He was tied to the sea, the land of the dead, and Calypso—who is literally a goddess. His entire role was to ferry souls between the living world and the afterlife, making him the one character who would logically have a way back. And let’s be honest, bringing back Davy Jones is the smartest move Pirates 6 could make. With modern visual effects, his return could be even more terrifying and epic than before.
The Future of Pirates of the Caribbean
With Amazon now gaining full creative control of the Pirates franchise, they’re undoubtedly going to make some big moves soon. But the key to success isn’t just throwing in a new lead or rebooting the series without care for what made it special. The franchise is at its best when it leans into its iconic characters, rich mythology, and emotional stakes. Jack Sparrow is important, but the story doesn’t work without Will and Elizabeth. And if Pirates 6 truly wants to recapture the magic, Davy Jones must return.
With all these pieces in place, Pirates of the Caribbean 6 could be one of the most anticipated films of the decade. The question now is, will Amazon do the right thing and give the fans what they truly want? The answer may come sooner than we expect.
