Its that time of the year guys, the spooky season is here. The Halloween festivities have started and as the day comes closer, I’m sure you all are making plans for Monday. Among all the other things that you may have planned, I’m sure there would be a horror movie marathon that is somewhere packed into your schedule and I assume like every year you’d be wondering which films to watch on the spookiest night of the year? Well, there are always the classics. You can never go wrong with them. If you’re interested in vintage horror films then you might be interested to check out The Exorcist, Poltergeist, The Shining, The Ring, Rosemary’s Baby, etc. However, if you’re interested to watch new horror films that have been released this year then this article is for you.
This year as a whole has been very good for horror despite there being some dull affairs. So, I have handpicked 5 films that have come out this year until now and I’m sure if you have marathon of these films your Halloween will be spent well. So, without any further ado, let’s get spooky. Sidebar, all these films are in no particular order.
X Is Perfect For Your Halloween Marathon
X was an extremely eccentric horror film. The premise of the film is actually very interesting and funny. There is this group of people who go on a farm to shoot an artsy porn film and while doing so they encounter various threats and it results in a murderous adventure. The film is very well made with great direction and cinematography. The film’s USP is not the dread that it promises rather an underlaying deeper theme related to old age and sex which has resulted in a franchise of its own. I think this will be great watch on Halloween. It’s so funny and terrifying with a unique villains and premise.
Hellraiser = Spooky Halloween
The film was not released in theatres and it directly debuted on Hulu. It was released near Halloween time to take advantage of the spooky atmosphere around. All the reviews for the movie has been all praise. The film is supposed to be the best Hellraiser movie since the original Hellraiser. It has brought back the dread that the original Hellraiser had caused. If you’re looking for a dark, horrifying movie with a ton of gore then this is the way to go. This will make your Halloween extremely spooky and bloody.
Nope – Definitely A YUP For Halloween
Jordan Peele is the contemporary master of horror, his latest film had to feature on this list. Jordan Peele’s previous horror films have been the best horror that those respective years had to offer. They were so good that even the Academy recognized their brilliance and rightfully awarded Jordan Peele. Once again his films are not your typical dumb horror movies. They’re layered and thought provocative ideas wrapped in a horror film. His films feel so real and yet most of the stuff is based on conspiracy theories and has a surreal feel to it. Nope (Review Here) is no different. It is definitely not his best film but it is one of the good horror films of the year. It is an extremely fun and full of tension adventure / horror film. Watching this film on Halloween would be really smart decision.
Pearl Is The Perfect X Prequel For Your Appetite
Pearl (Review Here) is part of the Ti West and Mia Goth’s X horror franchise or trilogy. The film is a prequel to the film X, that also featured on this list. Despite being part of a franchise, Pearl is a wildly different film than X and it is much a better film than X. It is not just a slasher film but a much deeper film that looks more like a character study wrapped in a horror film. It is telling a real and serious story about feeling inconsequential while simultaneously feeling different. Mia Goth’s performance in this film was one of the best of the year certainly the best in a horror film since Lupita Nyong’o in Us and Toni Collette in Hereditary. If you want to watch elevated horror or a horror film that is actually a film not a just needless cutting and sawing of people then Pearl will be the ideal movie for you this Halloween. It is very close to be horror masterpiece.
Barbarian Is A Unique Horror Flick You Must Watch
Barbarian (Review Here) is simply one of the best films of the year in my opinion. It is exactly the kind of horror movie I love. A horror film that is different enough to defy the conventions of its genre but at its core it is a horror film and not something that promises to be a horror ride but in reality isn’t. Barbarian is 1 hour and 42 minutes of pure fun and I mean it in the horror context. Where the film will give you exactly what you’d want. The first 30 minutes of the film is brilliant because you have absolutely no clue what is going on, so everyone is shrouded in mystery and hence, the tension is at its peak here. Another good thing about the film is the protagonist, basically, she is not dumb and I love that in a horror movie. Watching Barbarian on Halloween would be the most perfect thing you’ll do all year. I think it is a horror film that everyone would like and it would be extremely rewatchable.
Happy Halloween Everyone.
