Some films are simply enjoyable popcorn flicks that you watch, enjoy, and then move on. However, occasionally a movie comes out that causes you to pause and reflect. The ones you want to discuss immediately after viewing—you know the kind. The ones that lead to arguments, theories, or even that late-night discussion with friends about “what is life?” These five films should be on your watch list if you enjoy thought-provoking films that leave an impression on you and change the way you see the world.
1. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)

Imagine having the ability to forget about your ex. Doesn’t it sound alluring? Joel (played by Jim Carrey) and Clementine (played by Kate Winslet) attempt to do just that. Joel, however, discovers that even the negative times matter as he relives their relationship. The movie combines romance, heartbreak, and science fiction to illustrate how our memories, whether positive or negative, influence who we are.
2. Her (2013)

“Her,” which is set in a not-too-distant future, centres on Theodore (Joaquin Phoenix), a lonely man who is having difficulties following a breakup. He meets Samantha (voiced by Scarlett Johansson) when he installs a new AI operating system. She seems to know him better than anyone else, and she’s funny and inquisitive. By the end, you will drop your jaw, wondering – is love any less real even if it is with a robot?
3. Arrival (2016)

Governments brace for war when alien ships start to appear all over the world. To decipher their language, linguist Louise Banks (played by Amy Adams) is brought in instead. The narrative that follows is a gripping yet poignant tale that combines science fiction with themes of time, loss, and decision-making. In the end, it’s more about what we would do if we could see into the future than it is about aliens.
4. Synecdoche, New York (2008)

A theatre director named Caden Cotard (Philip Seymour Hoffman) attempts to put on a play that is representative of real life. He hires actors to play people he knows, constructs a life-sized replica of New York inside a warehouse, and becomes enmeshed in the layers as the project goes awry. It is difficult to watch, disorganised, and surreal, but that is the point.
5. A Ghost Story (2017)

A man (Casey Affleck) dies unexpectedly and then reappears as a ghost beneath a plain white sheet. He observes in silence as his partner (Rooney Mara) experiences grief, moves on, and ultimately departs. However, the narrative continues for years, decades, and even centuries. You are forced to sit with time, loss, and the little scars we leave behind in the film.
