Every Single Time Sean Bean Character's Dies In a Movie or TV Listed

Sean Bean has become a pop-culture meme for a reason: his characters die. A lot. He’s been shot, impaled, crushed, beheaded… pretty much every dramatic exit possible. In a recent interview, he even addressed the trend, admitting he’s started turning down roles where his character would almost inevitably die. Why does this matter? Beyond the dark comedic appeal of “Oh, Sean Bean’s in this, he’s definitely dying”, it also says something about his screen persona. He often plays characters with gravitas, authority, or moral weight and then they meet dramatic ends. That juxtaposition makes the moments hit harder.

All Sean Bean Movie / TV Deaths

Even after being a meme, Sean Bean would barely make it into top 5 of most on-screen deaths,  as the likes of Christopher Lee (70 deaths) and Dennis Hopper (48 deaths) have racked up much more on-screen deaths. But in Sean Bean’s case it’s not just about the quantity of deaths but how many of them hold an iconic place in pop culture. For example:

  • In The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) he plays Boromir and dies from arrow wounds in a moving scene.
  • In Game of Thrones (2011) he plays Eddard “Ned” Stark and is shockingly beheaded — a moment that shocked the audience and rewrote TV-dramatic expectations.
  • In GoldenEye (1995) he plays Alec Trevelyan and is literally crushed by a satellite dish/antenna collapse.

Most sites tracking his onscreen demises say his confirmed death count has ranged around 20-30 roles or more. However, nearly all of those sites haven’t taken time to update his death count since years or miss certain entries or do not count his off screen deaths. Well in this list, we have counted every Sean Bean character death – on screen, off-screen, implied, symbolic, or dream. You can also verify each entry from Cinemorgue Fandom.

And That’s Not It – Saga Will Continue in Robin Hood

And speaking of upcoming roles: Sean Bean is set to play the Sheriff of Nottingham in the new series Robin Hood (2025 TV series). Given his track record and the nature of that character (villainy often leads to downfall in these stories), many fans expect his character will also die in this one. One article even says the “character will probably die”. So yes — the “Sean Bean death streak” is likely to continue.

If there were an Oscar for “Most Creative Onscreen Deaths,” Sean Bean would already have several (assuming the award didn’t kill him first). Whether it’s getting riddled with arrows, executed for reading poetry, or facing medieval torture, the man’s track record is… unmatched.

And with Robin Hood (2025) incoming, one thing’s for sure — Sean Bean’s characters don’t live long, but they always die like legends.
