Persona Live-Action Series and Movies In Works

Atlus is attempting to adapt some of its most recognisable games, including Persona, to film and television with the aid of parent studio Sega. According to IGN, Sega is currently turning several titles from the Atlus’s renowned library of JRPGs into live-action movies and television shows. The Persona series appears to be first in line to get the Hollywood treatment. “Stories like those from the Persona franchise really resonate with our fans and we see an opportunity to expand the lore like no one has seen — or played — before,” says Toru Nakahara, Sega’s producer on the Sonic the Hedgehog film and television adaptations.

Sega Wants To Adapt Atlus Games’ Persona

The Persona series has had an especially busy time recently. Persona 3 Portable, Persona 4 Golden, and Persona 5 Royal are three games in the series headed to Microsoft Windows, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5, as was recently revealed during Summer Game Fest. Further, it was announced that these games would also be available for the Nintendo Switch. It is a widely admired series that follows young adults who must deal with their own complicated inner lives and relationships while engaging in epic demon battles, making it an excellent premise for the big screen.

Other Atlus games that may be adapted next include Shin Megami Tensei, a creature-collecting RPG series known for its brutal turn-based combat, and Catherine, a raunchy puzzle-platformer-dating-sim-RPG. Persona started out as a Shin Megami Tensei spinoff but has since grown into a successful franchise all on its own.

Sega confirmed that the forthcoming adaptations will be live-action but has not yet mentioned the studios it is considering for the projects. A few animated versions of the series have already been produced, such as a four-part film series based on Persona 3 and a mediocrely received anime based on Persona 5.

Sega and Atlus are entering the crowded sector of video game adaptations. Sony is also in the process of adapting a number of other games for television, including God of War for Amazon Prime and the Horizon series for Netflix. HBO recently finished production on the first season of an upcoming series based on The Last of Us. Viewers will have to wait to know when and where they can anticipate potential films and television series based on the Persona franchise and other Atlus properties.
