Without a doubt, The Witcher series is one of the best RPG series of all time. What started as an intriguing journey in Witcher 1, was turned into an experience of a lifetime in Witcher 3! It wasn’t just a regular game with cool graphics, but an incredibly executed narrative that set a very high benchmark in the gaming world. It has been six years now since Witcher 3 was released and you will still find it trending every other day. But the fact is that no matter how great a game is, fans always want more. The good news for such gamers is that a new Witcher game (let’s call it Witcher 4) has been confirmed and here’s all you need to know about it.
Witcher 4 Timeline of Development
Since, the official name hasn’t been revealed yet, let us call it Witcher 4 in this article. Here’s a quick timeline of events that led to Witcher 4 and everything we know about it so far.
2015 – Jakub Szamałek, Senior Writer, in an interview back in 2015 with IGN, stated that Witcher 3 ends the story of Geralt of Rivia. He said, “I think good stories must have an ending. You cannot extend them indefinitely, and we felt that Geralt has had such an amazing adventure, and his saga is already so long and complex that this seemed like a good point to think about an appropriate finale for the story.”
2017 – CD Projekt Red co-founder, Marcin Iwinski shared first promising update on the new Witcher game at and investor call. “The Witcher was designed as a trilogy and a trilogy cannot have a fourth part, can it? We like this world a lot. We invested 15 years of our lives in it and a lot of money. So, we’ll think about [making a new Witcher game] at some point,” he stated.
2018 – CD Projekt Red CEO Adam Kiciński confirmed that the game won’t be called The Witcher 4 in an interview with Bankier. “The first three ‘Witchers’ were by definition a trilogy, so we simply could not name the next game ‘The Witcher 4’. This does not mean, of course, that we will leave the world of The Witcher,” he pointed out.
2019 – CDPR renewed the rights for The Witcher and made a new agreement with Andrzej Sapkowski and wrote, “The agreement satisfies and fully clarifies the needs and expectations of both parties, past and present, and sets out a framework for the future cooperation between the two sides. The agreement grants CD Projekt new rights, as well as confirms the company’s title to ‘The Witcher’ intellectual property in video games, graphic novels, board games, and merchandise.”
2020 – Principal writer Jakub Szamalek made a case for Ciri being one of the next games’ protagonists. “Due to obvious reasons – well, she’s pretty much gone for two-thirds of the game – she didn’t get quite as much screentime as we writers would have liked. But hey, maybe it’s something we’ll get back to in the future.”
March 2021 – The speculation around a new Witcher game got a boost as CD Projekt Red said it will start parallel AAA projects in 2022. “We are planning to build cross-functional teams to work on both IPs. These teams will blend disciplines and expertise, so we have closer communication and skill sharing going on from the beginning. Cross-functional teams allow different aspects of development to run in tandem without complication,” explained head of production Paweł Zawodny.
August 2021 – A job listing was posted by the developers revealing that CD Projekt Red is looking for a camera programmer. According to the job listing, the studio is looking for someone with “real-time third-perspective cameras”. These are exactly the cameras that were used to create the Witcher series, as these games involve real-time choices.
March 21, 2022 – CDPR surprised everyone by officially announcing a new game in the franchise, “We’re happy to announce that the next installment in The Witcher series of video games is currently in development, kicking off a new saga for the franchise.” The game was confirmed to run on Unreal Engine 5 and became one of the first announced games to utilize this new ultra-realistic technology. March 22, 2022 – Gwent director, Jason Slama confirmed on Twitter that the Witcher 4 is being headed up by him. Check his tweet down below.
I am super thrilled to announce that I have humbly been working to ensure the success of the next big AAA The Witcher game as its Game Director! Think you could join the team? We have tons of roles open with the possibility of remote work we could discuss! https://t.co/bBbxs0JMmq

May 26, 2022 – Adam Kiciński announced that the next Witcher game has concluded its research phase. “We have recently concluded the research phase for the first game in the new Witcher saga, which means that from now on further development expenditures will be capitalized on our balance sheet,” he shared.
The Witcher 4 Release Date and Plot
At this point, we do not have any info about the development time frame or release date. Considering how the pre-production has just begun, we cannot expect it before sometime towards the end 2024. But as we all know how slow CDPR is and how we still haven’t got Witcher 3 Next Gen update, it is very likely we won’t see the new Witcher game before 2025.
As for the plot, if you look closely at the image CDPR provided above, you’ll notice that the medallion is different. It is probably the medallion from the Cat School of Witcher. Hence, its possible that the new game will be based on a new set of Witchers, instead of our beloved School of Wolf Witchers. If fact, it was subtly confirmed that it belongs to the Witcher School of Lynx (basically School of Cat 2.0) by Marcin Momot, CDPR’s Global Community director. Check out his tweet confirming the same below.
